Hello all
I had my op last week and went to have the dressing changed on Monday, but surprise surprise both toes are very swollen and overly tender, so I have to keep the new dressing on and go back on Tuesday to see what is going on, Hopefully not an infection brewing.I have been reading though whilst sitting with my feet up
but only when DH and the sprogs have been watching
The one thing that has driven me mad is not being able to get in the shower even with plastic bags on my feet (I asked and that is a no no, aaaaaaaaaargh)
Anyhoo enough of that
2tonsils, great news on the job :T
We were talking to a couple of our neighbours, who are of the same mindset as us lotand they have started to get bits in just in case, it seems that just lately those who looked on preppers as nutters have started to wake up to what is going on in the world and are asking for advice.
Went to our favourite survivalist store with our next door neighbour and saw this, I thought of you lot and it did make me grin :rotfl::rotfl:

I think with the bug-out bags, you would need a different one for different circumstances. You may need one for the cabin in the pines; another one for staying a few days with relatives; another one for heading for the coast, the airport or the Eurostar.0

And if one Bug Out turns into another?
Then what?0 -
Regarding radios, as we were discussing before.
I was mulling it over last night, and got to thinking what broadcast systems might be used during an emergency?
Logically, all 3 major ones (AM, FM, DAB) should be used, but, this being the UK, logic doesn't always apply.
So, I Googled and found the name of the person at the BBC, responsible for emergency planning, and emailed her the following:-
To: laura.ellis@bbc.co.uk
Subject:UK National Emergency Broadcasting?
Please advise, what radio system(s) (AM, FM, DAB, etc.) would be used, to broadcast information/advice to the UK public, in the event of a national emergency/disaster?
Thanks.
I'll pass on the information, when I receive it.
Hopefully, FM will be included, because I've just obtained (for the princely sum of £3), a tiny FM radio (with earphones), set of miniature speakers, and 3 changes of batteries.
Total weight - 5.4oz, which is barely half the weight of (and a LOT smaller in volume than) my Wind Up Radio.0 -
About the wind up radios, last year we bought my In laws a little one from B@@ts for Christmas, it's small and it has a LED torch too, it was in the gardening presents section if it helps....... Might be out for sale again with Father's Day coming.
I seem to remember it was both FM/AM.Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.0 -
That was quick.
The good news is, the reply says "All of them".0 -
Hi!
So I have been considering my chances in a bad situation, I am luckily trained in First aid, and have always been quite organised, I've never let my car fuel go below 1/2, I make my own cleaning products, I can cook out of nothing etc........ and circumstances are making me very conservative with money lately.... But that comes to nothing if I have no resources to begin with!
Right, so I have spent all day going around the house and checking how we would fare if anything was to happen right now.
We have a freezer with a couple of chickens, few steaks, a couple of ready meals, Chicken nuggets, sausages, chips, fish fingers and a few other bits.
We have also about 8 tins of beans, same with tomatoes (whole and chopped), a few jars of pasta sauce and curry sauce.
I have a few packets of rice, about 2kg I would say, 5kg of pasta, 1kg of dry kidney beans, and 1kg of lentils.
Fresh food wise we have some cheese and some salad, but no frozen veg.
I think I should invest in some frozen veg, even tho we wouldn't use it's nice to know its there if its needed, we should also get a few tins of tuna and ham. Again, not to be used but to have.
Because of work, I always have a suitcase ready to go with clothes for a week, plus a mini FAK, and toiletries. No food in it tho... Might just make a small bag and grab both if needed be.
If gas an leccy was cut off we have a gas BBQ we can cook on and one of those little stoves, the one with gas cartridges. For heating in winter we also have a gas fireplace, but we could shut off the gas to it and replace the lava rocks with real wood if needed. We also have a wind up torch, about 200 tea lights, and a few pillar candles (half burnt)
We have a bar outside with a big cabinet where I can keep a few 2l bottles of water.
Our garden is fully decked, so growing much veg is not an option, but again, we have some tomatoes and some peppers growing in pots, might be wise investing in a potato growing sack, but would those keep growing? for how long?
We do however have enough shower gel and shampoo to last us nearly a year, same with cleaning products for the house, but we only ever buy toilet paper as we go......
So, my idea is, with the small space we live in, to have a couple of sliding boxes under the bed (queen size, lots of room there) with some rice, beans, pasta, tins, flour, sugar, salt, coffee, powdered milk, batteries, candles, gas for the mini hob, toilet paper, toiletries and other bits and pieces, 10 2l bottles of water outside, and more veg in the freezer.
How would you store rice and beans to long term? I've seen people using 2L bottles of coke?? Would they be ok??
That is my initial plan and then we will se where that takes me!
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Ps. I have to really invest in another box with meds, and FA......Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.0 -

It's a bit late to be buying toilet paper, "as you GO".
As for the frozen food, that won't last long if the electricity goes off.
Cans, jars, foil wrapped, and dried foods, tend to last longer.0 -
Some Beechams Flu Plus and some Galpharm Cold relief Capsules, have been added to my 1st Aid Kit.
Also added to my BOB, the mini radio, speakers and batteries mentioned earlier, and a pair of lightweight reading glasses, in a hard case.0
