Lillibet please can you let me know if your library manages to get hold of The Survivors? My library has said it is not available, if yours manages to get it I can quote the ISBN no. and library it came from hopefully I will get to read it once you return it!
I have a feeling they looked for Survivors by James Wesley Rawles which I dont think will be available, is this the book you have asked for or is there a differnt one called The Survivors?
I am currently reading John Birminghams Without Warning, where USA population disappears in an instant when a "cloud" covers it. Only just getting into it but it tells the tale of those outside the USA and how the world starts to fall apart without it, told from the perspective of several different indivuals.

yes ive also studied economics in the past , the system is built on trust and a lot of that has been eroded since the crash, the only thing we can hope
is that TPTB have a vested interest in keeping things ticking over....an angry populace maybe an unproductive populace....thomas Malthus warned governments decades ago about the dangers of unrestrained population growth.......google trade wars solar panels between germany and china is his the start of the fight for scarce resources?0 -
I still think that keeping manual/old fashioned skills alive and working is the best insurance policy that we can have, as inevitable changes happen in the future and life becomes very unpredictable. The prospect of population die back for whatever reason be it over population of the planet (pre the industrial revolution the UK population was around 6 million and had been static for centuries, now we are supporting over 70 million!!!!!!!) peak oil, climate change - all three possibly is very, very daunting but to have the best chance of making it through the really tough times, if you know how to forage, garden if you can, preserve, use herbs medicinally, make shelters, make rush lights and tallow candles, cook on open fires, find clean water, cure hides, spin, weave, work flint/bone/wood, you'll have a much better chance than most and maybe be useful enough to justify your continued existence when the chips are down, it's a way off, but probably out there somewhere, and I for one want every chance of a future that I can get!!! :pRe the Venzuela t.p. shortage, is anyone taking up a collection? I could spare them a 10-pack...............:rotfl:
Of course, the end result will be that an entire generation will now suffer t.p. shortage anxiety issues and hoard the stuff once it does come back into the shops.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I kinda knew this anyways but it's shocking to see it spelled out in black and white.
That bloke needs to buy a new keyboard, his Caps Lock is sticking.
Why do people do that, I don't think it adds anything to validity of an item.0 -
GQ The Long Emergency is one of the books that most traumatised me when I first heard about Peak Oil. I had a sudden realisation that, for the most part, we effectively eat fossil fuel. As well as drinking fossil water as aquifers are steadily depleted. Although if this summer turns out like last year (which some forecasters are predicting, apparently) we won't need to worry about the aquifers in this country!!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
