Myvi is surpisingly spacious for such a compact car with a vast amount of head and legroom, allowing five adults and their luggage to travel in complete comfort. Should additional luggage space be required, the rear seats fold using the unique 60:40 split/fold-flat system creating a completely flat floor.
Myvi is kind to the environment with emissions of only 137 g/km on the SXI and 151 g/km on the EZI and can achieve an outstanding fuel consumption of 58.8mpg for the SXI over the Extra Urban cycle. Please refer to Environmental Information for further information.
Myvi has a comprehensive 3 year/60,000 mile manufacturer warranty, 2 year's free roadside assistance and an 8 year anti-perforation guarantee.
  • research on owners forums about the dsg gearbox, there can be problems that the dealer network cant find a fix to.

lots of small trips i wouldnt hit anything higher than a 1.8 engine for fuel costs. diesel a no go.

kia ceed approved used, 1.6 engine is decent and nippy avoid the diesel engine with stop start technology tempting though with £45 a year road tax come with toys and usb interface for use with phones and ipods (although i think the adaptor has be bought for it) and all of the range sits in the same insurance group last time i checked. quiet and ride is comfy.

    ford focus.

    subaru impreza 1.5 R 58/59 go for around £6595-7600.

Two years ago I bought a (then 3 year old) 2007 Astra 1.8 auto with 19k on the clock. It now has 27k on the clock. It was ex Motability and hasn't missed a beat, save the window sticking recently. Now it is worth less than £4k in a sale I can find no reason to trade it or sell it. MPG is not marvellous at around 30 mpg but with low mileage and an auto box it doesn't matter.

Faced with the same situation now and around your budget, I'd be buying something with manufacturer's warranty. Hyundai or Kia with long warranties come to mind and I might even stretch a little and get a new one if I were keeping it a while. Doing mega miles obviously requires a diesel.

If you are doing lots of short journeys I would stick to petrol.

I think the only specification that you have given that is appropriate is your budget. If you live in the middle of London with tight parking at the end of every journey, that might guide you to a super-mini instead of a people carrier.
Similarly if you visit Granny in John O'Groats every month, you might want something a bit more spacious and leggy on the motorway. Do you have a trailer or a caravan, or indulge in sports/pastimes that you need to lug around a lot of gear?
I'd do a little more analysis on actual use before narrowing down the field just yet and that little toddler has the habit of growing in both size and number!

Honda Jazz. Should get a good one on your budget from 2009ish...

Nippy around town, decent (if not great) economy/running costs, easy to park, good spec/equipment levels, very versatile, nice wide-opening doors for children, good load space...If you get the higher models, you'll get the panoramic sunroof, too...which will keep toddles happy for hours, spotting birds and aeroplanes from the back :)
