whenever my parents give me a lot of help I usually buy them theatre tickets for a show.
My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and it's price competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

  • A thank you card, a bunch of flowers from Tesco and/or a box of chocs are the usuals. I would defo go for a thank you card.

I like your homemade cake idea, but how about you invite them over for a cuppa to go with it as I'm sure that would be far more appreciated. I know you say you don't have room, but we used to have at tiny 1 bed flat not very suitable for inviting family over for meals, but a cuppa and cake is fine as you can sit on the floor if you have to. Or how about (and this is if we ever get some fine weather) you could make up a simple picnic with homemade cake, sandwiches, flask, etc and take them out to a nice park, along the riverbank or even just in your back garden (if you have one) and it will only cost you the price of the food.

Reading between the lines....a grandchild. But that might compromise the space situation further ;).

    I like that suggestion!

My Dad did a lot of work for my cousin recently. She got him and my Mum some tickets to a play. They liked it because it wasn't something they would normally do.

If your in-laws like food, but not meals out you could get them a hamper?

But agree with others that a note in a card is the most important part :)

Thank you to everyone for your kind suggestions, sorry I couldn't get on earlier to reply to people. The not having room to have them over I was really thinking for a meal, of course they're more than welcome to pop round for a cuppa and a cake even though it is a tiny flat, but I'd really prefer if that waited until we've actually got some furniture! You know what it's like...

I think I am going to do cakes and a nice note from us both to go with them, and put something along the lines of they are always welcome round ours for a cuppa and cake as well. I liked the plant idea too but may save that for his mum's birthday later in the year, we've given plants before as she also prefers them to cut flowers.

And to those who said give them a grandchild, that's not happening!
