Keeping my three mobile number on new three sim only contract

After not getting any good deals with three regarding an upgrade decided to go down the sim only route.

I have gone with the quidco £81 cashback and three's SIM 600 @ £12 p/m as this matches my needs and after cashback works out at around £5 p/m.

I'm wondering if its possible to have my current three number transferred over to my new three contract?

Or do i have to port it out and then back in?

Not sure about 3 but most other networks require you to port out and then back in.

Out and in. Your deal price was for a new connection. Same network but different tariff switching is called Migration (not porting). as migration isn't allowed you'll need to take it elsewhere then bring it back.

Don't expect to get that cashback. Its for new customers only and you aren't one.

This process is exactly what I'm doing. You may get the cash back. I have. Well, some at least.

25 quid a month one plan. Phone number I've had for years. Contract was 12mths and I'm well beyond that.
Try to cut cost. Topcashback new SIM only PAYG - new number.

Stupidly let myself be talked into not cancelling the existing Contract, but switching to another 18 month. Contract labeling changed within a nano second online.
I phone back, within an hour to cancel. "Nah, make it PAYG". I have to wait a month for that, for that to happen (so the can get another months payment? Never mind. It's done. I'm not fighting that....).
    Confirmation txt and email received.

    MY Q's to them.
Can I transfer existing credit from my existing the PAYG (The one I bought via TCB about 2 months ago (The credit is just sat there on my the SIM account. NOT applied to the SIM. I've only had one month of actual paid Top up used on it.)
Answer - NO.. Credit can't be ported
Q - can I transfer my (existing, long time owned) number over to the existing PAYG sim?
Answer - NO. Numbers can't be migrated across same network SIMs

So, I'll end up with TWO PAYG SIMS with three, one with a number I do use and no credit, the other with a new number (2mths old) and credit sat there.
TCB has tracked for the new SIM I bought and has now gone to payable.
(not the correct amount but I can't be a related issue "You already have an account so we're reducing the cash back" and the original One Plan contract never tracked at all - 100+ quid that was too. Boo Hoo! So I'd be careful about the actual cashback working. Esp for another 'contract, as you're doing. 12mths, you say?).

So I say that Yes, it's worth a shot. Three tracking seems to be pot luck for me via TCB
However, I'll get to retain my number on a PAYG and yes it would have to be ported out (onto an activated SIM read with credit on it) and then back into the existing PAYG sim with the credit on it. Or I just use the credit up...

Two rambles to answer one OP Q there...

    I'll get me coat....
