What to do with an old CRT Televison

Hi

Am thinking of buying a new TV to replace our eleven year old Sony Trinitron.

The Sony still works great, good picture. Works fine with a digital converter box plugged into its SCART.

Does anyone know a use for old CRTs? Presumably these TVs are so out of date no one wants them?

I'd be really sad to send it to landfill, but the wife says it's too big to keep anywhere.

John Lewis actually charge 9 pounds to dispose of them!

Amazing really, I'm a child of the '60s and when I was young TVs only lasted around 10 years max, then they were beyond economic repair. Sad to think now the technology is good enough they last so long they get obsolete when they still have years of life left in them.

So does anyone know a charity or something like that who may want it? cheers

Try offering it on Freecycle/Freegle, there's plenty of CRTs still changing hands on my local group. Also in my town there's a British Heart Foundation charity furniture shop which always has a large display of cheap CRTs for sale, that people have donated to them.

Put it on freecycle. At our local tip in wouldn't go in landfill, it would be recycled. I would imagine yours is the same.

Just wondering why you would want to replace it before it becomes faulty; surely prices on the new fangled stuff will have dropped by the time that happens.
Is there any picture that is better than a CRT?

£9 isn't too bad when you factor in the time, petrol and effort it'd cost you to dispose of it yourself.... not to mention the same service from my local tip (collection) is £22. I believe some local tips charge a few pounds for access, as well.

I've seen some lovely CRTs sitting at carboot sales, for free, too, and nobody wants them.

I advertised both my old CRT's on Gumtree, including a 32" sony, Went within 24 hours. The guy apparently supplies students at Uni who want cheap TVs.

Blame the EU and landfill tax for JL wanting £9 to take it awy. Fly tip?
  • My 'portable' Sony Trinitron lasted for 25 years!

I took it to my recycling centre.

I saw some old CRT TVs in a BHF store recently - they were going for £25 or so.

I would keep that Sony, you won't get anywhere near 11 years out of a new LCD TV. Being in the TV trade myself most of the stuff being sold nowadays is rubbish.
