Wife just passed - cheapest insurance

So my wife just passed her test. I have a cheap banger I want to get her insured on so she can do her local driving.

As I have been insured and driving for almost ten years now my questions are:

1) Is it legal for me to take out a second car insurance policy (perhaps with a different company). I.e:
- i register the second car in my name
- get insured (either with my existing company or new one)
- I become the main driver
- my wife the named/second driver.

2) Which will most likely be cheaper:
- my wife takes out a first time policy with me as the second driver.
- i take out a second policy with her as the named/second driver.

Yes, but you can't use your no claims on two cars.

Okay. So which is the cheaper option (the first or the second)?

Insurers don't usually care too much about fronting between husband and wife, but they'll probably baulk at this. If you suddenly become main driver on two cars, and it just happens to be after your wife passes her test, they'll notice. It's probably better to bite the bullet, and let her start to build ncd in her own name, on a car she's owner and keeper of.

Yeah, she started yesterday with a quote for £2200 but that was:

    - without me as a second driver
    - TPF & Theft
    - £250 excess
    - No occupation (even though she is a p/t private tutor.. doh!)

With the changes i advised her about the above she is now currently getting comparison quotes for £800-ish.

  • If your wife is going to be the main driver, she needs to be listed as such on the policy. It's just not worth invalidating your insurance for. If you are in fact going to be the main driver of both cars then I guess it's legal to do it the other way, although they might not believe it!

I would suggest getting quotes for fully comprehensive (it can be cheaper than TPF & T), adding yourself to the policy and maybe even another low risk person to bring the price down. A parent, perhaps?

yeah she just finished around 15 minutes ago going through quotes for herself:

    - her own policy;
    - fully comp;
    - me as a second/named driver.

That's what took it from £2200 down to £790 (the best quote so far Admiral). That and putting her actual occupation down (rather than incorrectly entering unemployed), along with an excess of £750, rather than £250.

The question now is can she add her grand parents or mother to her policy?

They don't take out insurance as they are automatically covered by their mobility car.

Her mother has temporarily had her license revoked due to medical reasons (expected to be driving again by September this year).

    Try
    her policy
    her as main driver
    you as named driver
    fully comp
    housewife
    p/t private tutor
(business use if she drives to students)
    highest excess possible
6000 miles pa if that seems reasonable for her
quotes through topcashback comparison site seem to be cheapest at the moment.

edit - she's not unemployed, housewife unless she's claiming benefits.
    leave her mother off.

The first one is definitely fronting and illegal, you can end up being done for driving without insurance as the policy is void, and any claim rejected. It could also leave you with a large third party liability if you run into anyone, the insure would certainly seek to recover any claims paid out.

The second one would get cheaper with time and allow your wife to build up a NCD, definitely the way to go

Yeah, as stated previously she is going with her own policy now. The car is already in her name so nothing needs to change there. I will be the second driver.

Going to see the local car insurance broker tomorrow so hopefully they can beat this current £800 price.
