Single now, after 23 years married.

Son (25) lives in his own mortgaged house. Daughter(19) is at local uni having passed well in 1st year of undergraduate degree.

I care for 2 parents and get IS and CA, also CTB and SMI payment

DD gets full loans and grants, yet refuses to pay anything to me. Her boyfriend is here and he refuses to pay anything also.

Tell them if they don't start paying you rent, they will have to find alternative accommodation.

If they are really being defiant, put a lock on their bedroom door and a lock on the fridge and freezer, or even simpler, if it comes to it, change your front door lock.

You have posted this on the Benefits board. If you post on the Families board, you are more likely to find the information you are looking for.

No-one can make you grow a pair if you don't want to. You can only be exploited with your consent.

Give them a deadline to contribute to the household, the sum you desire and need to run the house, then if they don't pay, change the locks and put their stuff out for collection.

Not really sure what sort of response you want as you haven't actually asked a question. What did you want to know (bearing in mind the responses you have already received and your reply)?

The going rent is debatable - but my son was paying £98 pw at Uni NOT including food.

He is now paying I think £75 to £80 pw in a houseshare, NOT including food or bills. Your daughter doesn't know how lucky she is, but she certainly knows she is taking the proverbial out of you, I guarantee it.

If you allow it to carry on she will learn nothing and you will end up being resentful of her and it may cause family relationship problems further down the line.

If my son was here, I would charge £40 pw including all bills/food/washing etc and that is very cheap. If he had a girlfriend living here too then it would be double.

I know you say you may not feel confident enough but the longer you leave it the worse it will become. Things are hard enough for everyone at the moment given the state of the economy, the fact she refuses to pay you anything is very disrespectful to you.
