Thank you, Mimi. I hope the info was useful. I saw you left me a 'thanks' on the long post I made so I hope it was relevant and useful. More and more buyers are understanding their legal rights in all this and the law is set to get tighter next year - but that is all only relevant if you are selling as a business rather than as a private individual.
I think there are other people better qualified to write a manual, though. I've been on eBay for 10 years come the end of August and buying online from the end of the 1990s onwards. I started selling on and off in 2004, but only ever as a private seller, though I sold a lot of collectables for a while and wanted to make a proper go of it, only to have my existing sales decimated by the credit crunch, so I pursued other avenues. If you added all the FB from various accounts I would easily have about 2000 FB, buying and selling included.
I also have basic book-keeping training, a year's worth of chartered accountancy training (enough to know a lot of the theory but not much of the actual practice) and I got interested in the law through browsing and posting on eBay forums over the years and learning what SOGA and the DSRs said. I've just completed a research Masters on International Law and World Order (going back to my politics degree roots). So I know what I can research --- but perhaps Soo and RFW and others are better at the practical than I am."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

CROWQUEEN, you are the best. I find all your posts in my threads and other threads really useful. Plus you are never condescending in your posts, even when it is a thicko like me.
I hope you keep posting on here as you have so much knowledge and advice. I, for one, really appreciate it. I am sure all the others do as well. Thanks so much for your time.

Quick question. When I sold the razor blades, I had 3 sets. I got them for myself but as there are 12 in each set, I sold 2. 1 of these lot went missing. I claimed for it and they have got in touch with me and said they want to see what the price I paid was for them. I actually got them from Boots but no longer have the receipt as this was like 5 months ago when I got them.
Do I have to provide an itemised receipt or will a credit card statement do? I'm confused. I've never had this before.......0 -
You should be able to print off a copy of what you sold them for off ebay.Quick question. When I sold the razor blades, I had 3 sets. I did but I got a letter off of Royal Mail saying you need to send us an invoice off your supplier?
RM do say that they pay item cost, but usually only enforce that for business sellers. I'm not sure if a credit card receipt is good enough, the last time I claimed for loss I had to produce an invoice or receipt for my goods, although they did allow me to break down and add additional costs associated with the purchase.
Is your account a Business one, or have you sold things that would mean RM could conceivably consider you a business.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If your a business you need to provide the supplier reciept - as they only pay the cost and not the sale price.
But for private sellers, most on here say they will go by the ebay final price.0 -

It's a private one. I bought 3 razor sets. Kept 1 for myself, and sold 2 as a buy it now. That may make me a business? I do pay tax on things I sell as some of the stuff I sell is from mystery shopping purchases.
I don't mind calling Boots and seeing if they still have my receipt on their system somewhere and see if they can email me it or something?0 -
Print off the webpage from Boots that shows the price of the items and send that in with a print out of what you sold the items for on ebay. Explain you are a private seller and don't have the receipt anymore but you have provided evidence of original cost and what you sold them for. This is what I did when I claimed for a private sale and they paid out for it.It's a private one. I bought 3 razor sets. Kept 1 for myself, and sold 2 as a buy it now. That may make me a business?
