broadband packages

is there any broadband packages that dont mean you have to sign away for 12 to 18 months do any of them do six months for instance

    Yes, many companies do 30 day contracts (though you will pay more), but getting short term line rental of less than 12m is more of a problem.
    You don't say if you already have a working landline or not?
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
