We used to shop at Tesco but tried Sainsburys and will never go back to tesco.

The meat at sainsburys is much better and the fresh veg seems to last longer as well so top marks to sainsburys from us.

I think all supermarkets are comparable, they will be good at something and bad at something else.

E.g. S's have a great, cheap organic olive oil.
But their 'new recipe' cottage cheese is so disgusting that I had to throw it away (lot's of whipped creamy stuff, little cheese bits and tastes disgusting).

I'd say the only one consistently bad is the Co-op, with very few exceptions like some nice bread, and a few nice vegs like their tomatoes and strawberries.
And Waitrose is consistently good (mostly at a price obviously, but we are talking about quality here), again with a few exceptions.

Not being biased as I work for Sainsburys - but our strawberries have been crap this year- have mould growing on them 2-3 days before the UB date. I have bought Aldi and Mr T's strawberries and been a lot nicer.

My favourite meat product has to be the extra lean mince beef which I use one packet every 10 days and buy it on the 3 for £10 range. Only 4.5% fat, which is brilliant - most lean minces are at least double the fat.

The instore bakery bread is hit and miss. I refuse to buy any bread from one store near me as its always dry.
  • Across the board Sainsbury's is much better quality than Asda, Tesco or Morrison's, who are its main rivals and operate an almost identical pricing structure (although Asda is undoubtably the cheapest of the four).
  • It looks like a one off for me then! The bread was kept in a cool dark cupboard and the mushrooms were in the fridge.

My mum was a keen Sainsbury's shopper so I was curious with my bad shop. Sainsbury's isn't the closest to us but I will make the effort to go every now and then.

I did notice a price difference but I think this is justified if the quality is better....

I'll give it another go and hope for the best!

Thanks for all your replies :j

My local co op has an excellent selection of locally reared organic meat, likewise locally grown fruit and vegetables. It sells locally produced jams, chutneys and baked goods as well.

that doesn't sound like the co-op I know
it seems to me that they are much less consistent than the other supermarkets, almost like each branch has different pricing and totally different stock
mine is really bad, their own brand stuff is often hardly edible, compared to any other supermarket I use (tescos, lidls, sainsburys) even a simple dip ends up in the bin (and we don't throw away food easily)

I don't buy that much from supermarkets anymore, but Sainsbos is my choice out of the big 4. I generally buy fruit and veg from my local stall, and top up wiith Lidl / Aldi.

I wanted to make a stockpot of soup this evening so popped in for some carrots - and came out with a load of bargains for a couple of quid, all of which went straight into the freezer. I think I was just lucky!

The bananas in local Sainsbury's are horrific; even if you go first thing they all look like they have been sitting around for weeks and are going black.

Haha, really? We seem to have the opposite problem... they're always fluorescent green. I like my bananas a bit brown. Swap? :]

In any case, as others have said, Sainsbury's is always a bit hit and miss. One time I bought a bag of pears and one of them had a bit of a bruise and split — didn't notice until three days later when it had gone all mouldy and spread to the others in the bag :(

Having gone organic now, it has completely changed my shopping habits. Whereas I used to go to Lidl and ASDA and get a delivery from Waitrose I'm now using Sainsbury's plus Abel and Cole and Waitrose deliveries.

The quality of the organic meat and poultry I've bought in Sainsbury's is very good. Finding organic fruit and veg in any supermarket in my town is difficult. The organic bananas I bought from Sainsbury's were a bit green but tasted good.
