Ok I am considering getting https://www.smsbug.co.uk.

Who/what is the best provider/operator/tariff to use alongside this?
And what is the cost?
Any useful tips on the best phone to have would be appreciated also.

Many thanks.
Ted

    "best provider/operator/tariff"

depends on your other requirements: e.g. voice/texts etc
I have had problems using smsbug with o2 and not sure if 3 support it

    "what is the cost"
data cost (i.e. mobile internet) for a typical text is 1-2 pence (usually 1). On top of this you pay smsbug 3 eurocents (2 pence), sometimes more depending on destination.

Orange and o2 offer 1mb data with inclusive texts if you top-up £10/month

You might also consider https://www.vyke.com. Costs are cheaper e.g just 1pence per text (+mobile data cost, this can be avoided by sending from PC)

I would just be sending text messages.

"Orange and o2 offer 1mb data with inclusive texts if you top-up £10/month"
how much internet time would you get with 1mb.

I am new to this technology.
But basically as I see it, you access the internet from your phone and send a message through smsbug or vyke or such like provider.
So just need a phone which allows internet access and a provider who doesn't charge over the odds to access internet. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Many thanks.

I've never had the smsbug sign-up message back to my O2 phone, in about a dozen attempts.

I'd also suggest Vyke, and see also mobisms and vgsmail

I don't think the type phone matters too much, as long as it has Java, and your decision on which network should depend more on other charges, unless you are getting a SIM and phone specially for this use. In which case, if also used abroad, maybe Virgin's same data tariff as at home, 0.5p/kB, will be interesting (sending a typical message uses less than 2k of data)

I have an O2 contract though, and while roaming this sends to UK numbers using the inclusive texts at 4 for 1, so I only use Vyke to foreign numbers. Also the 100k inclusive data seems still usable abroad.

Nowadays providers charge for amount of data sent/received rather than time. A typical text would be around 1-2kb so 1MB of data would be enough to send 500-1000 SMS depending on exact data involved

You need to find out amount charged per kb. Most PAYG providers are around 0.3pence per kb (£3 per MB), t-mobile charge 0.73pence per kb. So like i said in first post, DATA cost should be around 1pence, maybe 2 (they charge to the nearest pence). On top of that you pay sms/vyke etc their rate

The technology is exactly as you describe. You download a java applet (program) onto your phone which then connects to internet and sends SMS through smsbug/vyke etc

You need a phone which can not only connect to internet but also has java program capabiltity. most modern phones apart from the very cheapest/basic should have this

    hope that helps

I have the Nokia 6100, and am fairly confident I am able to do this.

"You need to find out amount charged per kb"

Any suggestions on how to do a search for this?

I will be travelling alot, how would I go about finding the best network coverage?

The nokia 6100 is more than adequate

To check how much data costs per kb check each providers website.
These are the costs, i THINK (please check)
    o2 0.3p/kb £3 per MB
    orange 0.3p/kb £3 per MB
    T-mobile 0.73p/kb
    Virgin 0.5p/kb

Will you be travelling abroad or just around UK? If abroad might be best to go with virgin as they charge the same rate of 0.5p/kb in UK and abroad
