I have a Panasonic combi too, and I love it.

As a cheap comforting filler I will slice potato and onion (sometime leek or any other veg I have) and layer it in a lasagne type dish. Finish with a layer of potato and then fill the dish with hot stock (made with cubes are fine).

Bung it in at 'combi' 160/medium until crispy brown on the top. Towards the end, you can put chicken breasts on the tall metal tray/shelf thingy to cook.

I did buy a new oven when I moved into this house a year ago, but I haven't used it yet :rotfl::rotfl:

I will try this in a few days as I have some leeks and onions to use up and it sounds lovely.

Sorry to be a pain and I know I am being thick, but what exactly do you mean by "combi 160/medium"? Does that mean using both grill and oven? I'm guessing oven at 160 degrees and grill on medium?

I would have said oven at 160 degrees and medium microwave, as most of the combi stuff uses oven to brown whilst using the microwave to cook the food faster, hence speedier and cheaper cooking with the benefits of oven browning.

Ok, that makes sense. I guess what I'm looking for is exact step by step instructions that match my appliance.

  • we bought a microwave/grill two years ago when my old micro packed up and still do not know how to use the grill. Thinking of getting my 16 year old grandson to come around and show me how to use it. I use mine mainly for my porridge each morning but must get around to using it more especially with fuel bills getting higher. Do use my slow cooker a lot though.

We moved house recently and the new house already had in it a large range type electric fan oven with a gas hob. It's a nice oven (well it will be once I manage to clean out years worth of grub from the inside, but that's another story!) but seems to be costing us a lot in electricity to run it. Seems like a waste putting it on if we don't have much to go in it. Also the grill on it doesn't seem to work properly, possibly needs a new element.

We were wondering about combination microwaves, can you just use them in place of a regular oven or do you need to adjust the recipes? I'm assuming one would be cheaper to run than a massive electric fan oven, is this right?

We didn't have a microwave in our old house as we didn't have space so haven't had one since I lived with my mum (which was a while ago). There are a few things I've been thinking a microwave would be useful for now we have the space so this seems like a reasonable option.

Any recommendations on models etc? We haven't got a lot of spare cash at the moment so under £100 would be preferable. Just having a quick browse I found this, does it seem allright?

    Thanks!
  • I don't know that much about them as I have only just got my 1st regular microwave but my Mum had a combi microwave and she didn't think it was much good- it was too small to fit in a lot of things you would want an oven for and then the whole thing broke after about a year. Not sure how much she paid for it though.

I do agree with fan ovens being pricey to run- I have taken the advice of others on the board and am trying to only use the oven if I have more than one thing to cook in it e.g. cook some biscuits, a cake etc at the same time as a main meal.

We bought a DeLonghi combi microwave a few months ago after our oven broke, as we had no choice we used it quite a lot, general microwave things like reheating but also proper meals, pork chops in cider and I was amazed at a) how nice they were and b) that the drill element did in fact give them that lovly grilled love and taste. I also like steamed veg and do this in the microwave too, much faster and just as tasty.

I have a combi oven and they're great! I bought mine a couple of years ago and I haven't turned my big oven on since. I paid £180 but I chose it because of the large cooking area and the 1000 watt micro; its been used several times a day and been really pleased with it but unfortunately the micro part stopped working last week  I don't know whether to replace it or just get a cheapie micro as I rarely used the convection/micro together

No need to adjust recipes, although you'll need to read up on how to use the convection/micro/grill combinations for speedier cooking.

I had to buy a couple of smaller casseroles and a small roasting tin to fit but if I take out the turntable I can use some of my bigger dishes. I'm only cooking for me but I find it quite adequate. I've done a roast chicken, dish of roasted veg etc, baked bread and cakes, shortbread and anything else I would normally cook in the fan oven.

I'm thinking of getting a portable induction hob and getting rid of the big cooker altogether as I only use the hob (I also have a Remoska, an electric steamer and a slow cooker all used regularly, so I have a few options!) ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
