Just back from our local coop - went for a packet of dark soft brown sugar (no joy) but came away with 6 x 6 XL FR eggs - down to 56p a box, best before 22 Sept - down from 2.22. So thinking cap on to convert them into lots of different storable goodies!

I'm thinking make some meringues and freeze the yolks, bake some small cakes, make some orange curd as have some hanging about, some ice cream for Xmas (got some cream to use up as well)...

    Anything else?

I might be a bit late with this, but they are just asking to be made into pickled eggs!!

GQ I have tried over the years, with celeriac coleslaw and celeriac dauphinoise, and I'd like to like it, but I'm afraid it's one of satan's vegetables. (The other ones are celery and turnip, so if the SHTF I'm up the creek with British winter veg).

:D You should get together with Softstuff - she once described celery as tasting like Satan's armpit.:rotfl:

I was deeply-traumatised by root vegetables in school dinners in the early 1970s. Gordon Bennett, I can see that mashed swede still, orange and icky and placed warm onto a cold plate and oozing liquid. Or what looked like the most gorgeous golden chips you ever saw, which came around every few weeks. What a waste of time; they weren't potatoes they were deep-fried parnsips and each child would take a bite out of one of them and spit the rest out.

And the grey undercooked pastry and the various other horrors.......by gum, I feel the need to go and lie down in a darkened room with a [STRIKE]stiff gin[/STRIKE] whoops, I meant a cold compress. Honest!

Two of my favourite veg - yummy mashed swede with lots of butter and black pepper, and delicious roasted parsnips, all sweet and crunchy with lovely fluffy middles - oh gosh I am drooling :rotfl:

ETA - and creamed celeriac is lovely too - but then I am a total veg fan!

    Rant warning

DH and I go to dog training on a Sunday morning. We have three dogs but only the Beagle needs training but hubby takes the collie so we can do it together and he understands why you can/can't do certain things etc.

A couple of weeks ago we had doggy test day and DH got into a panic and didn't want to take his turn so I took both dogs through. This one old [STRIKE]bat[/STRIKE] dear went round saying to all who would listen that we were nothing but cheats :mad:

I don't get it, they are both my dogs and I'm no wonder women so why the moaning ??? in fact the Beagle failed and that's the one I have every week.

As you may remember hubby is in the forces and is in the middle of a nervous breakdown. He has lost 3 stone in weight and is in a really bad way. Dog training was a bit of fun to get us out of the house and socialise and now it has put him off. I hope this woman stays away from me as I could give her a right ole peace of my mind :mad:

It has really upset me but I could kick myself for letting it get to me. Its was not enough for her to go moaning test week but the last two weeks we have been away she has gone complaining to the powers that be and the collie didn't get her certificate !!! DH has put a lot of effort in with her and was upset but if he was his normal self he would have shrugged it off.

    Waffling now sorry.

We are doing posh today as we are having a joint of beef (yellow label down to a quid)

Smells lush and I can't wait yum yum

My problem(or is it really)I don't need to tick to set times for eating and I can survive on less and don't feel overly hungry...the only good thing I guess is it helps keep the cost of buying food down so I could be very much in the camp that GQ belongs and actually have a weekly budget of £15.

initially its the cost of buying the stuff in the first place but then it lasts or is portioned out so it goes further...

I mean it's 4pm and I have not eaten yet but don't feel hungry, however I know that I can make a meal, have soup, cereal, fruit and milk and come to no harm. I sometimes can survive on one meal daily.

That was also a decent meal I had even if it was at 3am!:eek:You know...the mince, gravy and vegetables and I even did something that my Father sometimes did mop up the spare gravy with some bread:D

I suspect I used £1 of veg mix and approx the bread, mince and gravy came in at around 50p so it worked out at £1.50 I suppose. Is that expensive for a meal for a single person, I probably should try to get it down still further.

My food budget is probably low because I eat so little, if I was to have three meals daily and have two courses that might go up quite considerably.

I think Breakfasts can offer the greatest variety(if you have the time to cook them and can face them)and are one of the cheapest meals of the day.

As most items can last days(probably nott quite as far if you have a family and/or a partner.

Sometimes I can eat what be breakfast at another time of the day...
