It's very unfair of you all to have one when I have a genuine need for one, you're all mean....but if you do fancy sending me one or two I shall promise to look after them ever so nicely. :D

Just looking at war-time recipes and found potato milk pudding

    Potato Milk Pudding

    10 oz shredded potato.
    1 oz flour.
1 pint milk or milk and water.
1 oz sugar or 1-2 tablespoonfuls jam.
    Nutmeg.
Method-Mix the flour and milk and boil. Shred the potato, but do not let it stand or it will go brown, and cover at once with milk and flour. Place in a pie dish, add the sugar or jam and stir. Sprinkle with grated nutmeg. Bake for 1½ - 2 hours.

Has anyone tried it? Is it worth a punt as a snack for the girls and I after school tomorrow? I'm dubious after seeing bacon and bananas cooked together on WT Farm
  • I had one like Ruths till we had kitchen modernised 2-3 years ago can never remember I had loved it in earlier houses but this kitchen is so narrow when flap was down you had to squeeze past, also had the 8ft long 6in wide wall cupboard which I Hated totally as held next to nothing. I don't miss not having the unit in the kitchen but would like another for study, old one was just past it and went to dump. If I ever moved and had a bigger kitchen I would as done in past have a few of them again but definately not here.

I sometimes throw my hair in a scarf 40s style but usually snood way although I remember when growing up the woman shopping with scarves like Ruths on their heads. My mother would no more been seen with a scarf on like that than been seen naked, she unlike me always made up and did her hair before she popped out even if it was just to get a bottle of milk or even call us in to play. I was her dispair till her dying day that I don't wear make up unless I am going out out or when I was working, not just shopping etc. My sisters do though. I just cannot be bothered wasting money to dress up for shopping although do have must admit the odd day I will put some on even if not going anywhere, just brightens me up.

Can you grow rosehips in your garden, was thinking they might be a good thing to grow for the Vit C?

  • Spikey sorry forgot to say am sorry to hear about the cut in hours for your job, a kick in the teeth you don't need.

Lisa also if I remember right your daughter is a breath holder, my nephew nearly 31 now used to do that, would just drop and at first used to scare life out us but he grew out of it and thankfully never came to any harm and no lasting effects.

  • PAH, the original dr said it was breath holding, but I've watched her as she passed out and she was crying and breathing normally. they said yesterday that it's a reaction to pain and not breath holding. She was very tired after it and slept in a bit this morning, but still happy to go into school. I've spoken to her teacher, the head, the first aiders and double checked that the office has all of my contact numbers. She'll be fine, i've come to expect the unexpected with that child ;)

One of the childminders at school came over today to ask if i have any vacancies. I registered a couple of months ago and have done very little to look for business while i was trying to get the house and paperwork all sorted. she's passed my number on to a couple of parents that are looking for a before/afterschool minder so hopefully will start that soon and as only before and after school will still be able to work where i am now as well.
that should boost the coffers a bit

I ordered DH's prepay prescription card today. now he has to have more meds for his arthritis it works out cheaper by quite a bit to go on prepay, and the best bit is that it's paid by direct debit over 10 months. so a tenner a month for ten months or£15+ every 3-4weeks...no brainer really.

DBB (baby brother, who is actually an awful lot bigger than me despite being 10 years younger) came round for his tea tonight, so i made him cook;)
he doesn't do cooking unless it's a tin of tomato soup or a frozen pizza but he now knows how to make toad in the hole and he even ate it (he's a fussy b*gger normally) but he didn't like the braised red cabbage.

Not sure how mum manages because Bro and Dad are both very fussy at times, rather her than me:p.

we watched dawn of the dead again as well...might need to pop over to the wtshtf thread :rotfl:
all doors and windows locked and managed to scrape together enough 20p's to get DBB a taxi home, because he didn't want to walk home in the dark ;). mabe we'll watch a comedy next time:D:cool:

Aw poor DD I hope its something she grows out, have to admit a new one on me, kids you learn something new with them every day:)

Great news about the child minding I wish you all the best with that.

You reminded me my prepay certificate runs out on 5th of next month,( i have 10 regular monthly meds, so dread what it would cost if I paid for each one, not sure what the price is now, usually I like to pay for it all in one go but not sure if will manage to, have a bit of leeway as meds due at end of month so can take it out of hubby's Oct wages on 15th.

I just feel have enough going out every month if I can afford to pay something all at once I do, also house insurance due on 2nd Oct, just remembered that as typing. Better start looking at prices, my bank was cheapest last year by hundreds of pounds but likely they will put it up if I auto renew. Was able to pay that in one go last year but with everything gone up since then its going to have to be monthly unless I can find it same price,£220 somewhere and even that will be a struggle but doable just but only because we can live out of storecupboard for most of the month.

Got to also remember hubby is playing for 8 weeks in a bowls league starting Oct that is going to cost us a full tank of petrol each week instead of usual every 2-3 weeks, then still have to pay for rest of his trip to Ireland at end of November I have the option of going, if I pay but cannot leave Sophie for one night never mind 4, shame as they always stay in top class hotels and I spend the time he is playing bowls in jaccuzzi, sauna etc., lovely.

sigh its all expense isn't it every which way you turn.

    Morning everyone.

Been away since the dreaded 40:D

Not bothered about getting older but I have moved up a tick box in most forms which confused me when sorting out the car insurance.

Have a war wounded, one eyed cat at the moment. He is doing really well and I think he quite likes his pen with en suite facilities and breakfast in bed. He has been on the streets for a while and has two broken fangs, his eye was attacked while fighting with another cat and was beyond saving. He is now "poster boy" for why to get your cat neutered. He is a little poppet full of purrrs, was full of purrs and fleas when he arrived :p

Fetched another pen so will be re arranging the garden again.

Fleas are a real problem this year but think we finally have it cracked. RIP £7 cheaper if you buy online rather than vets and stronghold for the pets.

The wall is down between the kitchen and dining room so now have a lovely big kitchen. We can't afford to decorate yet but it has been a delight having room to move around, I was up making blackberry jam at six yesterday morning :rotfl:

Had a bad day yesterday as Hubbies youngest decided rather than going straight to school he would wonder round the estate calling for people  I told him the dangers of this only a few months ago and said I don't mind if he takes his time getting home but in the morning he has to go straight to school and walk down the road everyone walks down as if something happened no one would know until after 4pm. I don't expect the kids to understand the dangers but when hubby doesn't see what the fuss is about it feels like pushing treacle up hill with a fork.

Hubby bought me a Roberts DAB radio (solar panel on top) for my BD so of to get breakfast ready to absolute 80s :rotfl:

    Morning all

Belated happy birthday, fuddle, hope you had a smashing day to make up for everything not good! You deserve a nice time, hun x

Missed the wartime farm programme as I was at work, so will watch tonight - I take it you all liked it? I've looked on our library catalogue for some of the books folk have mentioned on here (K Stewart, Hovel in the Hills, etc) but to no avail - you think they'd be available on Amazon or similar for not much money?

My freezer's half full of brambles already, and there's still millions round here, along with elderberries, so will have to pick some fresh this weekend and jam them straight away. I'll save the frozen ones for pies etc for during the winter. Going to have a go at that courgette lemon curd recipe, too, sounds yummy, and I've got all the ingredients. If I can get some jams made the next few weeks, then they'll do for after school treats for the littlies, or in small jars to go with Christmas presents, or for my sister for having them after school.

Must try and keep up, you're all as good as a tonic for me! :T:D
