FUDDLE - if you can't have a greenhouse have you ever considered a couple of 'Cold Frames'? they are much less likely to get damaged and you can get them with a plastic top instead of glass, safer for littlies and pets, and because you dont fix them down you could take them with you if you ever moved on Cheers Lyn xxx.

I'll look into it MrsL We have a hard standing bit that's approximately 1 metre by 5 metres that is in the sun (:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:) for a lot of the day. If I could get something to go there it would be brilliant. :)

I've knocked up the rice bag using bits of odds and ends of material. I heated it for 1 minute, gave it a shake and then for a further 30 seconds. It's toasty. :) (although the puppy is very interested in it's contents to I'd best watch it before I find a trail of rice through the house  )

I've a skirt to alter too Hester. I bought it from Primark for £2. It's a long length woollen one, I would like it to my knees.I'll get round to it one day, no doubt just before the autumn as I think i'll be living in it with a pair of chunky knitted tights, welly warmers and welly's.

My neighbour has been chatting to me about a trooper named Hannah Hauxwell. Apparently she lived in North Yorkshire/County Durham and there was a series on TV about her. Is there a book I could read about her at all, does any one know. I'd like to read about her.

I found a cold frame on Amazon for £41.99

but I think I could make one for a lot less than that

I wonder where I would source the plastic though? It would be perfect for that spot :)

Fuddle, you'd be surprised with chickens. My dog has a low tolerance of small fluffy and feathered things but he got put in his place by one of our ex battery chickens. He went up to see how he could get into the coop and one of the chickens went right up to him and pecked his face. He whimpered, ran away and wouldn't go back up that part of the garden. He heard them coming out of the coop one morning and started cowering, it was funny! He's a 20kg solid Staffie and he was petrified of them. Saying that, the chicken in question was on the fiery side, her name was Godzilla, the local cats were scared of her too.

  • FUDDLE - having consulted he who knows these things, he says you can get the plastic(perspex) at places like B & Q but it is difficult to cut to size. His suggestion is to use heavy duty polythene like you would use on a polytunnel which you can buy by the roll and either screw battons on the outside of the wooden frame to hold it in place or use heavy staples to secure the polythene. He who knows points out loudly (he's watching the Grand Prix Practice in another room!) that a cold frame doesn't need transparent sides, they can be solid only the top needs to be transparent - Does this help? I hope so Cheers Lyn xxx.

I make framed prints for children and replace the glass with a thick clear plastic for safety reasons - I buy it on eBay, and cut it with a heavy craft knife. You can get different thicknesses (I use 2mm) and sizes. It's called PETG. I would think it would do the job okay.
