Cold horrible grey day here, I'm in a really lazy canny be a$$ed mood (yes again!) but quite happy its samhainn because to me that means the start of winter, and I like winter.
I think that's what helped women in the old days to cope with a heavy workload and hard work - was good neighbours. And in here that's what we are.
Thanks to whoever mention "The Great Depression" - I got it and am gobsmacked by the parallels between 1929 and now. Very interesting.0 -
Morning everyone.
I'm safely installed up in Cumbria with my bagpuss cat sprawled on my knee keeping it warm. I got her as a 8 week old kitten 17 years ago this coming xmas. When I moved out from ex about 10 years ago I moved back in to my parents for a while with my cats. I wasn't allowed to take them with me when I moved back out!:rotfl:Bagpuss cat is the only one out of 3 left and my Mum dotes on her so am quite happy for her to stay. Plus it meant i could adopt 2 greyhounds at home (both confirmed cat chasers).
Horrible wet and windy weather here so am sitting with lappy catching up on surveys. Might even have a look at Pininterest.
Was thinking about going for a swim later but I might just do an exercise video in the house and save myself £4. Going to go to MrA later to do my Mums bulk shopping. (my parents don't drive and both struggle to carry bags of shopping so every few months I come up and do a large shop for them). Might go about 4.30, just when it starts getting dark and have a leisurely trawl around the shop, hopefully missing the bulk of the knocks on the door.Don't mind the small kids but get annnoyed with the teenagers who ask for cash!
Stiltwalker, have a great day on Friday.
Pops, I left a reply for you on another thread (about wearing warm clothes indoors) about electric blankets, don't know if you have seen it?0 -
The really interesting parallel, to me, is that it was the austerity measures in Germany in 1932 that really boosted the rise of the Nazis - the hyperinflation that supposedly terrifies Germans today was over by the mid 1920s and anyone who was not on a fixed income had recovered. Germany was actually doing reasonably well by the end of the decade. Then came a Chancellor who responded to the crisis caused by the Wall Street Crash by imposing deflationary measures. Hitler only got 2.8% of the vote in 1928 (I remember that from O level history all these years later!!) By 1932 his support was rising at about the same rate as Golden Dawn's in Greece. The rest, unfortunately, is history. France very nearly tore itself apart trying to cling to the Gold Standard. Once again, the UK was lucky in being forced off the Gold Standard early in 1931 - it meant that, despite the severe hardship in the Northern towns, the country avoided the worst of what happened in Europe - imagine if support for Mosley's black shirts had been boosted enough for him to gain power!! I find it so frustrating that the Germans who are supposedly haunted by their history won't learn the right lessons from itIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

You think that if you went back to the beginning - or even to the Romans - you find that history was just a huge long game of "round and round the mulberry bush"? LOL0

Will hunt it out Aria...and thank you:)"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Isn't it just that we don't learn from the past & keep repeating the same mistakes?
I'm just keeping my head down & wearing my tin hat till its all over (one way or the other!)Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -

Hi Catz. How're you feeling now? Hope you mouth is no longer painful.
Would you be willing to share the name of the shop that is running these workshops? Sounds like the sort of place I might be interested in attending, depending on location and courses available. (True confession time: although I have crocheted my entire life, I do not know how to make a granny square. Never done one. Ever. Don't know the theory, either.)
Thanks.

PS: In my news, I found out this morning that my business is being moved to a different region within the company, which may mean a new boss for me or it could be redundancies all round for me and my team, since they already have a large finance department. Won't know until tomorrow when my big-boss visits (he's responsible for both regions). I am so glad I've got money in the bank.
Thanks for asking!Yes dental work went well, all ok so far, not so reliant on the painkillers now the bruising has come out, but a bit headachey and icky still, might be that it has brought on some ME symptoms
Living on porridge, hm soups and managed some hm shepherds pie last night , so all good. I have come down to make some leek and potato soup as that's what I really fancy for lunch!
The workshop is called Make do and Mend and is based in Chelmsford, so the south east, (it is run by Hannah who has appeared on superscrimpers, remember the lady who made a top from 2 scarves? a sundress from a pleated elasticated skirt and jazzed up beachbags? ) She is really lovely and very encouraging. I have a very talented older sister and for that reason got very discouraged when trying different handicrafts, I didn't think my attempts were ever good enough! Silly really as she would be very upset about that and is very encouraging herself. So far I have done a patchwork session and a granny squares session, so now have enough to occupy me for a while. The rest of the workshops include, machine embroidery, shoemaking, knitting, dressmaking (want to do that next time it comes around), bunting including glass bunting, rag dolls, pincushions, book binding etc so I am going to be busy! In the meantime there is sew and natter and knit and natter for support and friendship.
Big (((hugs))) to all that need them Softstuff particularily! Pipneyjane - hope all goes well for you at work! brainfog setting in so forgive me if I don't remember all but I do think of you and read when I can. Off for a painkiller now (been putting it off) and a rest! Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
