So sorry to hear of your loss.

A few years ago, I came across a cat, just sitting in the road, making no attempt to move when cars passed. I was going to meet a friend for a night out but couldn't just leave it there for the next so and so to run it over. I thought there must be something wrong with it just to stay there like that, so I stopped. It was in shock, there was no blood but it turned out it had a broken hip where obviously a car had caught it. I picked it up carefully and put it in the back of my car, went to pick my friend up and then spent the next hour trying to get a vet or the RSPCA to take it, Eventually managed to get hold of the RSPCA who arranged for a vet to open up and take it.
It got patched up, then went to the RSPCA shelter. I actually wasn't happy with it ending up there as I'm not a fan of there's, but it was only a young cat and very pretty so I thought she would be alright finding a home, if not, I think an elderly friend of mine would have gone and fetched her as she took a liking to her when I went to see her in the shelter. She had already been reserved, so I was glad. The shelter had called her primrose, which actually suited her.

I couldn't have just left her there though, it was a busy road, on a bus route, drivers would have expected the cat to get out of their way.
  • I've been on both sides of the story. I hit a cat once, and I have seen a cat killed on the road.

I never found the cat I hit. I was driving along a narrow country lane with hedges on both sides. It was dark, and raining. The cat came out of the hedge on my side and I slammed on the brakes, missed it with my front wheels but felt it go under the back. I stopped, got out and spent the next 20 minutes in the dark trying to find the cat, crying my eyes out in the pouring rain but I couldn't find her, and never did find out what happened to her. (I'm assuming she was a 'she' as she was a tortoishell)

The one I saw killed was also when I was driving. It was a fast A road and I saw the cat at the side of the road. I was a little way off and he made a dash to cross, but a car coming the other way hit him. The driver didn't stop which I was so angry about, it wasn't his fault because the cat shot across in front of him, but then having hit a cat myself I know how you just go into shock so I hope it was the shock that made them keep going, not just callousness. Anyway, I stopped and I could see the cat was already dead, he'd been killed instantly. I wrapped him in a towel and took him to the side of the road wondering where the nearest vet might be. (I was away from home and didn't know the area, in the days before smart phones and mobile internet access). Luckily for me a lady came out of a nearby house and offered to take him to a local vet for me since I was working and by now was late for a client visit. I wanted to get him microchip scanned so that owners could be contacted. When I got home later that day I looked up the local vets and rang round till I found the right one. Turns out he was chipped, so the owners had been informed and had taken him home for burial.

I have picked other dead cats up from the side of the road over the years including my neighbors cat, for the same reason to get them scanned.

I hope someone would do the same for me if it is ever my cat.

OP I'm sorry for your loss of your cat.
