I dont see the point in sacrificing hygene for some percieved environmental benifit of not using a small amount of bleach. If you are connected to the main sewer the water company will treat the water before it is released back into the waterways.

The water will be treated regardless of wheather you have used bleach or not and you have already paid for this treatment through your water bill. I'm really struggling to see the environmental benifit here.

Err how about all the resources to make the bleach in the first place, and the bottle and the transport, etc.

Bleach, aka Sodium hypochlorite is a "moderately toxic chlorine salt...it can bond with other chemicals to form simple organochlorines. Organochlorines can cause cancer and endocrine disruption" Taken from "Better basics for the home, by Annie Berthold-Bond.

I must say those arguements are rather weak. First of all bleach is made in in huge quantities so process of making it is quite efficient. If you were to calculate the amount of rescource comsumed by making one bottle of bleach it would be quite small - thats why you can buy supermarkets value brand bleach for pennies.

Next, I would dispute that sodium hypochlorate is "moderately toxic". It is used for all sorts of things including for disinfection of drinking water (in very low concentrations) - this isn't the most dangerous chemical around by a long way.

I stand by my previous comment. In the interests of hygiene its probably best to use a small amount of bleach as the environmental impact is actually extreamly small.
  • I guess we'll just disagree with this. I still fail to see why people are so atrracted to bleach and thinking that their toilets are unhygienic. I use a little white vinegar from time to time, for cleaning the outside of the toilet as well as the inside. I do this for environmental reasons, the money saving (if any) is secondary. I have 3 boys aged 2-6 all pi**ing over the place and my toilet is clean, white, non-smelly and they are not ill from my toilet cleaning practises.
I forgot to say my toilet cleaning practises include not flushing loo every time and then flushing away with water from washing machine or the bath

http://www.channel4.com/4homes/magazine/sept_06/eco_cleaners.html is worth a look for those of us who haven't yet worked out why bleach is bad but would like to think that they CAN make a difference, no matter how small it is.:p
