How to clean a toilet brush?

I use a toilet brush to give the toilet a quick swish round evey morning cos I don't insist on flushing the toilet just for a wee, and from time to time I clean it with vinegar aswell. But the toilet brush (should be white and black) is looking a bit brown and black. Any green ideas on giving that a clean?
Thanks

I don't use a toilet brush anymore I bought one of those Toilet Duck things where you flush away the wadge of cleaning tissue each time, much more hygenic in my opinion... but anyway back to your toilet brush, I used to put bleach in the brush holder and stand it in the bath for an hour or two then tip the bleach down the toilet....

Oh cool, someone asked and answered my question for me! But, bleach down the toilet? Is that, well, OK? Not sure about the 'green-ness' of that, but that's just a hunch, not based on fact...

I use a few drops of tea tree oil in the nappy bucket, I'm sure this would work just as well. Maybe a bit more frequently though.

  • I use a spray made up after watching 'Anthea Turner - Perfect Housewive'

1 part vinegar (distilled, not malt), 3 parts water, a few drops of lavender essential oil.

The vinegar is great for limescale, and a generally good cleaning agent, and the lavender oil is there to combat germs & smell nice.

I use it on all bathroom surfaces, not just the loo, and the kitchen.

I use it in an attractive little oil sprayer - and feel really smug about it!!!

I use the microwave to sterilise dish cloths - not sure about doing this for your loo brush though! Try spraying it with the lavender vinegar, leaving it overnight, then flushing the toilet through it.

Is it necessary to use it every day?

fwiw I keep an old toothbrush for this purpose instead of a full size loo brush,it's easier to replace once it's dirty, than the rusty metal bits you get in toilet brushes.

  • Thanks for replies. It had indeed gone rusty and so I reluctantly bought a new one. I do use it fairly often because we don't flush the loo with every little wee and the toilet does get a little stained otherwise. And that way I avoid haveing to use any cleaner apart from a little vinegar every now and again!

Yes I replace mine quite often and it seems so much nicer to look at a sparkly white loo brush
