many people choose not to use bleach down their toilet as it gets into the water system. gentler options are available that are less polluting to our waterways.

I dont see the point in sacrificing hygene for some percieved environmental benifit of not using a small amount of bleach. If you are connected to the main sewer the water company will treat the water before it is released back into the waterways.

The water will be treated regardless of wheather you have used bleach or not and you have already paid for this treatment through your water bill. I'm really struggling to see the environmental benifit here.

I fill the toilet brush holder two thirds full of boiled, cooled water and a couple of squirts of Ecover toilet cleaner and store the brush in that. Occassionally if I'm feeling particularly houseproud I sometimes add some essential oils as well. I change this mixture once sometimes twice a week and at the same time rinse out both the holder and brush with boiling water from the kettle over the main drain outside.

Environmentally friendly products that work just as well ARE available- I might worry about the hygiene of my work surfaces, but since I don't put my hands down the toilet before I make dinner (on a regular basis) an occasional squirt of Ecover an a scrub with a toothbrush above the water line is enough-

If you are even slightly worried about hygiene I suggest the best thing you could do is keep the toothbrush in your toothbrush holder out of the bathroom after you've gone to the loo- even with the seat and lid down it has been proven the germs are released into the air during the course of flushing the toilet, so it'a fighting a losing battle whichever way we do it.
