Do you have to have a dvla photo ID licence or are the old green ones still valid?

The old purely paper licence is still fine.
    BUT

If any of your details have changed, and you have to send it away to get them updated you will end up with a photocard licence.
It amazes me the number of people that have a paper licence even though they've moved, but just haven't bothered to tell the DVLA.

Thanks for the replies. I had a photo licence which is about to expire but I still have the old green paper licence. I thinking about simply using the old green one again once photo licence expires.

Old paper licence valid from pass date until your 75.
New photo licence valid for only 10 years, £20 (at the moment) replacement cost every time .Seems like a simple fee raising exercise to me.

Your old paper licence may not be valid if you have had a photo licence.

How have you got both an old paper driving licence and a photocard licence? I thought the normal system was to post off the paper licence to be replaced by the card. You aren't confusing the paper counterpart to the photocard with an old paper licence are you?

Thanks for the reply. I have the old green licence and the photo licence with the counterpart. Still have the clear plastic wallet the old licences came in as well. So I think simply return to the old licence. It states it is valid on it until 2038.

As Normal Castle posted above I wouldn't be certain that the paper licence is still valid given that a photocard licence has been issued.

What caused you to get a photocard licence in the first place? If it was some change of details like your address then presumably this won't be correct on the paper licence?

As you have a photo licence, it replaces the the paper one which would no longer be valid

The photo licence will also be valid until 2038, it is only the photograph that is required to be updated every 10 years
