CSJ v Skinners

Options
Has anyone switched between the 2 for their dog?

Which way round? From CSJ to Skinners or from Skinners to CSJ?

If you are feeding CSJ - which one and where do you order from?

Thinking to switch Zara from Skinners (salmon) to CSJ but their website is a bit.. ermmm simple and not sure what to think? Where to order from? Which "flavaour" or variety?

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

  • GR haven't used it myself but did some research into it a while ago & TBH found it all a bit confusing as there are too many types & didn't know which people used.

Also, the hypoallergenic one isn't cheap! http://www.csjk9.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=45&idcategory=5

Have you requested some free samples from them?

Email them explaining about Zara's joints and skin, and say that you don't know which variety she would like.

They will then send you a personalised reply explaining why they have sent you the particular samples they have and what benefits it should have for her. You get about 3 meals worth of samples so there should be plenty to test whether she likes it!

I think if you just go to the 'contact us' bit on the csj website you should be able to find how to do it from there.

I am looking at this one:

    http://www.csjk9.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=45&idcategory=

More expensive than Skinners Salmon and can not see feeding guide on this one to be able to calculate the monthly cot...

Other ones have feeding guides but not this one.

Samples - Zara lways eats samples as those are small packs. When I order normal bag problems start LOL

    :rotfl:That sounds like my cats!:rotfl:

That's the one I looked at too!:D If you do get some, I'd be interested to know what it's like as still not 100% happy with what Maisie's eating (but so far the only combination that doesn't seem to upset her tum)

Do not think I will be getting any as the same bag of Skinners is nearly £5.00 cheaper.....and feeding recommendations seem to be very siimilar or a bit less on Skinners which makes CDJ that little more expensive than the £5.00 price differnce on a 15kg bag....

Actually - is skinners 15 or 13.5 kg bag?

    Orijen was 13.5 I think?

I am tired I think.. I should go to bed I think LOL

Can not get my head around to comparing ingridients to see....

Katy - Zara only ever eats salmon so I know which one she would eat (after about a week of hating me like she did when I swapped from Orijen to Skinners LOL)

If you order from CSJ remember you will have to add on the delivery charge too.

You could always ask for free samples anyway ;)

It's worth checking to see if you have a local supplier of CSJ then you can avoid these costs

Never used Skinners but I can't praise CSJ for my dogs highly enough My Golden has been on it 2 years and my Lab puppy for the year since I have had her. Both love the food and health wise their coats are lovely and no complaints or problems.

Nabbed my prices off Google so could be a little out in the daily costs, but think I found the cheaper ones.

    CSJ - £2.03 per kg
Can't find guideline online but I found it on another website that suggests 30-40kg dog (so assuming the middle is 35) needs 395g a day. Works out at £0.80 a day
26% Salmon, Whole White Rice, Corn, Fish Meal, Barley, Chicken Fat, Oats, Minerals, Brewers Yeast, Beet Pulp, Whole Linseed, Salmon Gravy, Salmon Oil, Vitamins, Glucosamine, Methylsulfonylmethane, Chondroitin Sulphate, Herbs.

    Skinners - £1.65 per kg
35kg dog, recommended ~438g a day, works out £0.72p a day (just over)
Whole rice (40%), salmon meal (17.50% dry weight), naked oats, peas, sunflower oil, whole linseed, sugar beet pulp, vitamins and minerals.

    Autarky - £1.70 per kg
35kg dog, recommended 415g a day, works out £0.71p a day (just under)
Salmon (min 35%), rice (min 33%), oats, chicken fat, yeast, full fat linseed, alfalfa, prairie meal, peas, unmolassed beet pulp, dicalcium phosphate, mannan oligosaccharides, milk thistle, marigold, nettle, seaweed, blackcurrant extract, carrot, yucca extract, thyme, beetroot, tomato, peppermint, fennel, paprika, turmeric, dandelion, ginger, fenugreek, oregano & aloe vera (min 0.4% herbs, min 4% vegetables).

Personally, for a dog with allergies, the Skinners salmon looks best. No maize or wheat which can be quite common triggers od dietary allergies. Not as much salmon as the others, and you feed slightly more, but still works out pretty good value for money.
CSJ you feed the least, and it had the most salmon, but it's not the cheapest (especially if you have to factor in delivery costs) and does contain corn//maize.
Autarky is cheapest, more salmon in than Skinners (though saying that, it's salmon, not salmon meal - so could lose some of that % in water weight), but someone pointed out on another forum that prairee meal is a (sneaky) name for maize gluten - by-product of manufacturing maize starch. Not sure if it's as bad for allergies as 'pure' maie but worth bearing in mind. Also contains a few more fillers than Skinners (but also the various herbs - not sure if they'd be in enough quantity to provide great benefit or not)
