what makes you think for one minute we are a united kingdom? As atypical has said we're not since devolution.

You just have to listen to the news to know that very little of the items discussed actually affect wales, scotland or northern ireland - think of the policy changes in education and the nhs and you'll know what I mean.

If you think that welsh (ie normally living in wales) students getting £1500 off their loan is bad better not tell you that those same students are only having to pay approx £3250 regardless of where they study in tution fees from sept 2012

How long do you have to live in Wales to claim student finance Wales rather than England?

You have to be classed as 'ordinarily resident' in Wales before starting you course in university.

    That apparently means:
Ordinarily resident has been defined in the courts as 'habitual and normal residence in one place'. It basically means that you, your parents or your husband, wife or civil partner live in a country year after year by choice throughout a set period, apart from temporary or occasional absences such as holidays or business trips. Living here totally or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education does not count as being ordinarily resident.
We will not treat you as being ordinarily resident in Walesif your main purpose in coming here has been to receive full-time education and that you would have otherwise been living elsewhere.

to be honest Silvercar I don't know - I've read welshcar's post but to be honest the definition posted is vague.....after all its not beyond the realms of implausable for a family to move to wales and student in question goes straight into the upper sixth form.

So on one hand they would be normally living in wales having moved here because of one of the parent's job yet have lived in wales for less than a year when applying for finance.

I suppose the acid test would be where are the children educated - though what would happen if they were in private boarding school in england yet the parents lived in wales?

Just as an update to Martin's article, when trying to find an answer to your question, I've read something which gives the impression (unless its a typo) that the cancellation is extended to those students having a maintenance grant in the 2012/2013 year ......as soon as Junior's grant is paid I'll be paying a £5 off to wipe off £1,195.

Cardiffstronghold - areou repaying it? How much loan did you have?

I am seriously wondering if my youngest can qualify. He's just taken A levels and has offers for 2012, but there is a real chance that he won't meet the offers.

Plan B is to retake two papers by self study, taking the exams in January and then do some travelling or work. He could easily base himself at family in Wales from January 2013 and apply to student finance from there.

Well this is a money saving site so I guess that's one of way of saving money lol!

Might be worth having a look at the application form as I seem to remember there was a sutbly worded question to the effect of have you moved to wales especially to take advantage of getting an education.

anyway here's hoping you don't need plan b!

Lovely for all the welsh students, but if we are all part of GB/UK shouldn't it be all students or none getting the £1500 wipe out?

Almost as lovely as "free" education, "free" school milk, "free" prescriptions etc.

Someone is paying for this ........

I also did this last year. I paid £5 off my son's loan and £1500 was taken off! Thank you Welsh Assembly!
  • Hi, I am eligible for this, how do I go about doing it? Have I got this right? by paying off £5 now, I get 1500 of it cleared? thank you.

So if we pay just £5 to get this money off, does that mean we have to pay a amount every month cz we've started repaying??
