Being Chased for Debt that is not mine

Options
Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could help shed some light on this for me? 3 months ago I received a letter from Advantis Credit for a debt for Severn Trent Water for a property I lived at for 3 weeks. Long and short of it was I moved in with a friend and it didnt work out so was removed from the tenancy agreement and she continue on a single tenancy herself back in 2010. They have sent me a letter in both our names for a period of over a year. I happily contacted the Debt Collector and explained the situation, and got copies of my Council Tax statement proving how long I was there, a copy of the new single tenancy agreement for my ex friend for them and Severn Trent. The letting agency advised me they could not provide me with the signed single occupancy agreement for my ex friend due to data protection and also provided me with an accompanying email. I have sent this to Severn Trent and Advantis, both are now saying without a signed copy of her single occupany agreement I am still liable - surely I have provided them with all the evidence they needed and the letting agency is correct about data protection?? I feel very harassed over this and would like some clarity from someone?

Thanks

I am afraid they are probably going to stick to what they want as the onus really is on you to prove you were not there.
STW's staff have a list of documents they are allowed to accept and although it might seem unfair to you or odd they are bound by that list and would not wish to risk their jobs to go against that list.
The best you can do is write to CROSS complaints and ask for the situation to be reviewed as they have more power then the APORTS staff.
You should get a reply to any CROSS complaint within 10 working days by either phone or letter and I would be surprised if they did not sort it out quicker as it is quite a straight forward thing to sort out.
