SSD? Flash? !!!!!!!!!

Paraphrased, does this mean it's designed to recognise the bad blocks before they cause the drive to crash, and that it flags the bad blocks as unsuitable for further use? Do they do this fairly reliably?
Is there a point where, if the bad blocks reach a pre-set limit, the drive says "Enough" ?
All hard drives have been doing this for years, although you get bad sectors on normal drives.
If your drive supports S.M.A.R.T it can normaly give you an estimated time to failure (for normal wear)0 -
Hello again, really want to get back to the FLASH question please.0

you've already had some very good answers, what do you specifically want to know?
SSDs use flash memory chips, they are exactly the same to the end user as a regular mechanical HDD but have much faster read/write speeds meaing aplications open much faster, also because there are no moving parts they are the best choice for laptops as you can move them while they are working without any chance of damaging the drive.
think of them as exactly like an SD card or a USB flash drive.0 -

- are you asking about next-gen 'retina' native 6Gbps controller & SSD, or
- an upgrade SSD for your current MacBook Pro, what is it you want to know ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. What is the flash question? The replies above give good information on the advantages of using an SSD (made up of flash memory) rather than a hard drive. With prices plummeting at the moment they're a much easier choice than they were previously as you had to give up a lot of capacity and fork out a lot of money for an SSD. Now even 512GB SSDs have crept under £300 which should be good for general use.

Ok, what I wanted to know was how to compare a laptop with flash drive instead of HD in terms of size etc i.e. a 500Gb HD is roughly what size flash etc.0

I'm still not sure I understand your question, so lets eliminate anything its not with the following :
- a 500GiG [512] 2.5" SATA HDD ~lfl~ replacement will start at around £40
- a 500GiG [512] 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD Hybrid will start at under £100
- a 500GiG [512] 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD will start at around £600
Whether or not an SSD replacement will give you anything near SSD benefit depends on the MOBO / Chipset / BIOS and Operating System, so tell the group the exact O/S & Lappie details and we will tell you. Yes an SSD will go straight is as a bog standard SATA without SSD benefits but you will get only fractional benefits compared to average SSD performance.
As to [STRIKE]not understanding[/STRIKE] your question above :
- size as in physical size 2.5" ? if that's what you mean yes a lappie is going to be 2.5" do no buy any other drive of any type unless its 2.5"
- size as in space for storage on a 2.5" SSD ? well as above even though they're down 40%[ish] it depends on how deep your pockets are
- size as in speed ? that depends as stated above on the chipset & O/S
If you just want to replace a kerknockkerated drive in an old lappie just stick a ~lfl~ replacement drive in and stay away from SSD's. Right .. .. .. off to watch the Tyson fight - see Ya! !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Well if you are currently using a 500GB drive and want to have the same capacity then get a 500GB SSD.0 -

so if you have 500gb on a normal hard drive you will need a 500gb ssd to fit all that information on, changing the drive does not change the size of the information stored on it.
its like saying you have a 2l bottle of coke but instead of the plastic bottle (hd) you want to store it all in a jug (ssd) you will need to get a jug big enough to fit all the 2l in as that will not get any smaller just because you are changing the containerDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
As I said, I've always had PC's and thinking of getting a Macbook Pro which comes with flash drive, instead of HD. Idiot guide please was all I wanted.0
