You could always use 07700 900 followed by any 3 digits - they're numbers that don't exist on purpose, made by the regulators as dead numbers for use on TV and film ;)

Or you could get a free personal 07xxx number from:-

    http://www.flextel.com/numbers/070-Personal-Numbers-Free.htm

This will cost you nothing and can be diverted to any phone, mobile or landline. This is paid for by the cost of ringing the number being extremely high, so much so that spammers and unsolicited callers won't bother. Also it doesn't receive texts.

I have one and give it to people who insist on my mobile number who I would prefer not to have it.

I have no connection with Flextel, merely have used the service for years.

All the financial institutions that I have relationships with have my mobile number and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times they have contacted me. Each time it was purely to verify activity on one of my accounts.
  • Will you not lose your number if you don't make a call once in a while?

    Yes you will.
  • i really dont see the problem with my bank or my credit card company having my mobile number, you can opt out of marketing on the same page where you would normally input this info and you are only going to benefit if the company contacts you to verify the authenticity of a transaction.

the same people that dont register their details are the ones who come running to these forums and post along the lines of "help....I tried to make a payment via my card but it didn't go through...I don't know why....my bank is crap..." or "help....I have seen some transactions on my statement...I dont recognise any of them...why didn't my bank call me"

A couple years back I had a number of unauthorized transaction on my credit card, and the cc company contacted me - on my home phone. If I'm not in and the cc company wishes to contact me they leave a message on my ansafone and I contact them - simples.

Somehow we all managed to operate perfectly well 20 years ago when there were no mobile phones. Oh for a return to the good old days of a quiet train journey! :)

My mobile was purchased with my own money for my own convenience, not that of my bank, credit card company, airline, hairdresser, insurance company, yada yada..

At the end of the day these enhanced security systems are more for the protection of the banks and cc companies than my own. If they must have my mobile number then they can jolly well help me pay the bill for it!
