Shower turning itself on

Hi i need some help please.
The other night my 3 year old power shower turned itself on at 2:30am , no water was coming out , there was an awful burning smell and it set the fire alarms off.
I had to switch off the main power to the shower in the airing cupboard.
I called the manufacturer and they will repair it as its under an extended warranty.
However , what i wanted to ask was , shouldn't the shower have some sort of safety switch to stop this happening ? The manufacturer won't comment and will only replace like for like , which worries me slightly.
I just wanted to add the motor/pump has already been replaced twice in this unit
