Nokia N8

Hi all.

Just wondering if anyone here has a Nokia N8? Just wondering if they are any good, and if you have any problems with yours?

Always had nokias as I am used to them but mine was getting old (N95) and started to seem slow compared to phones out today.

I was considering getting an HTC wildfire s, like the look of them but I have heard a lot of people have problems with the internal memory/constantly getting messages saying the memory is full and they then have to delete stuff from the phone, so that put me off a bit.

I have decided to go for the N8 instead because its nokia, and also because the main thing I am looking for is a good camera.

I have seen a second hand one locked to 02 in good condition for £150 for a second hand one, are they worth that now?

Thanks.

Easily worth £150, it's worth that for the camera alone. Make sure it upgraded to Belle though, makes a massive difference to the phone, will be like night and day compared to your N95.

I've had no problems with mine, it's built like a tank and has taken all the abuse I've thrown at it including having a bath in vodka!

However, if you don't take many low light/night photos, something like the Samsung Galaxy SII will do the job, and you'll get the benefit of more apps and a bigger screen for not much more money.

Have you seen the 808 Pureview? Best phone camera on the market by a very long way, expensive though.

How did you manage to break the screen on yours?

Mines been dropped down stairs, onto concrete, onto tiles, everything and the screens fine. Plenty of scratches on the metal, but the screens intact.
  • I have been using N95's for the past six or seven years, and like the OP was looking for a fairly modern Nokia.

I borrowed a 5230 to see if I could handle a touch screen; I did and then went about researching which Nokia would suit.

I ended up going for the N8 around 3 weeks ago, purchased second hand (just a few weeks old though) for £160.00, which was a good price for it.

Although many will doubtless knock the N8, coming from the N95 via the 5230, I find it more than good.

And I'm a woodworker by trade and am hard on my phones; I've got a rubber case for the N8 and it's already survived some falls with the screen hitting the corner of machinery not a scratch on it.

My advice would be to go for it and update the software ASAP - might also try swype for the keyboard.

    Good luck

N8 has the most fragile screen I ever come across in a phone.

It's not meant to be dropped into the pit of Mount Doom in Mordor..!

I've had mine for nearly two years and always had a screen protector on it. It's been dropped from varying heights and still hasn't got a scratch on it. The case has a few marks but everything works like it's still brand new. I'm due to upgrade so I'm sticking with Nokia and going for the Lumia 800.

The N8 was a bit temperamental with the old Symbian Anna OS but since the update it's been great. Only problem I have found is when you use predictive text, if you enter a word, press space then realise the word is wrong, it won't let you go back and highlight the word to change it... you have to delete it and type it again then change it... annoying but not the end of the world...!

In summary, a big thumbs up to Nokia... very reliable and pretty indestructible... Oh and the battery doesn't last long if it's constantly connected to retrieve emails, tweets and other unnecessary tatt...!!

If you don't specifically need the Lumia 800, you can currently get the little brother - the 710 on PAYG from CPW for about £100 at the moment.
Might be a good alternative to a contract with the 800....and they're not too dissimilar.

I think my girlfriend must have been unfortunate with her N8, she's now on her third. The 2 previous phones both had the same problem, the bottom of the casing broke (the part which is held on by 2 small screws). She did manage to get them repaired through our insurance as Vodafone and Nokia refused to repair them.
