Also you should fully discharge the battery from time to time. Here is Apples write up which applies to all laptops and other devices.
Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her notebook on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month. Need a reminder? Add an event to your desktop’s iCal. When your battery no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs, you may choose to replace it. If your notebook came with a built-in battery, you should have the battery replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Long-Term Storage
If you don’t plan on using your notebook for more than six months, Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life. Be sure to store your notebook and battery at the proper temperature.0 -
It really goes to show that battery technology is probably the most backward of all electronics!0

Is their less overheating when the laptop runs without batteries?0

This is a perennial chestnut question, if you Google it you will find no definitive answer, so just make up you own mind.
Its a bit like "Whats the best free antivirus" question that comes up regularly0 -

The exposed surface area is presumably greater without the battery than with, so heat produced by the system gets drawn away a little quicker.
It's better for much the same reason one is advised not to place the laptop on one's lap.0 -
When the battery charges it will produce heat and be warm to the touch.
IME with rechargeable batteries generally, more so as the battery becomes fully charged."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

More complex devices batteries have power management functionality built in, for instance turning charging off as the battery reaches maximum capacity."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I didn't know Ubuntu was incompatible with battery power.0 -
one good reason for keeping the battery in the laptop is that power cables on a laptops are designed to be removed easily, therefore they a) do not have great connections b) tend to get pulled out by user movements (usually inherent in the use of a laptop is that it is on your lap/passed around/used on the moved etc)
many times i have had problems caused by the above when I was plugged into the mains without a battery...0 -

I have a laptop because sitting on the sofa with a desktop on my lap would be very uncomfortable.
I use my laptop on mains almost all the time. I occcasionally switch off the mains and let the battery fully discharge.
I can't be bothered removing the battery. The laptop never leaves the house so battery life just isn't important to me. In all the years of owning various Dell and Acer laptops. I have never had a battery fail or decline to less than at least an hour's use.
My laptops never overheat despite almost always being on my lap when in use.0
