Do you remove the battery from laptop when using mains adapter?

Options
Just wondering if it's better to remove the battery or keep it in the laptop. I hardly move it around the house, was think to keep it on mains only, but don't know if it's any healthier for the laptop in terms of performance/longetivity of service and also if it makes the battery worse...
Thanks!

If you are going to use it for long periods on mains, discharge/charge the battery to 50%, remove it and store it in a cool place (as in out of direct sunlight and not near radiators, not in the fridge).

If your laptop is a Macbook Pro or a corporate grade one you don't need to worry - just use it as you wish.

i posted a similar question not so long ago. i usually ran the laptop off the mains with the battery in place.
i found the fan was running a lot and laptop at times was overheating.
since removing battery and running off mains only i have not had any problems with overheating.

    Why[?]

    This is why:
    • The rate of degradation of Lithium-ion batteries is strongly temperature-dependent; they degrade much faster if stored or used at higher temperatures.
    • The rate of degradation of Lithium-ion batteries is also related to battery charge level; they degrade much faster when at 100% charge, than at lower charges. Since batteries die if deep discharged (depleted) and since a battery has some self-discharge it is frequently recommended to store batteries at 40% charge level.

We used to have a corporate portfolio of several thousand laptops and you could always tell who ran theirs on the mains as they also went earlier in life than others.

I have two relatives who only use theirs on the mains and both of their batteries died prematurely despite being warned.

whereas it is good for the battery to be taken out and not always charging, I personally always leave the battery in simply because if there is a power cut then my laptop carries on working like nothing happened, and that to me is far more important than having a battery in a draw somewhere that can still hold a big charge.
when I first got the laptop it could go about 2.5hrs on a full charge, over 3 years later being almost 100% run of the mains with the battery in, it now runs about 1.5hrs which I don't think is that bad (ie after 3 years it still has 60% capacity)

So is the battery being simultaneously drawn from and replenished when on the mains? Why can't laptops have a simple manual switch to suspend the charging process? Continually taking the battery out and back in is just a pain (even though I like the 'click' the Asus Eee battery makes on replacement :) )

Why not just take the power cable out and run it on the battery regularly from new.

It warns you, in good time, when it needs charging, if it is in a good state.

If you leave it plugged in why have a laptop?

    Thanks!

I removed the battery of this old inherited laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501) about two years ago. Upgraded the memory installed Ubuntu, lo and behold I have a perfectly functioning device for accessing the WWW.

My lady friend's HP (I can't remember the model) won't work on mains power without the battery.
