I actually work for Argos call centre so I can help you with this query. I can confirm that as long as you have the receipt you will be able to have your laptop fixed under the guarantee. Now the usual process is to call HP who will arrange to collect the laptop, repair it and return it free of charge. However I understand that HP are advising that the serial numbers do not match and the laptop is over 12 months old? I can't see how this is possible as your receipt only states the cat number and not the serial number. Okay I'll advise you what to do.

Option 1- go back to the store and speak to the manager. Take your receipt with you, due to work / child's coursework etc. Teladvise that you are really unhappy and you need the laptops urgently l theP m you want this sorting and you are not prepared to call Has they are not helping.

Option 2- phone the call centre (sorry haven't got number to hand but it is on the receipt, push option 4 to speak to adviser) and when connected as to speak to a manger. If you choose this option the manager will sort this for you and will usually offer vouchers ect as goodwill for inconvenience caused.

Personally I would advise you to go for option 2. Just to remind you that you don't need bank statement as long as you have the original receipt.

Care to give your name so we can quote you?

Closed - it just stopped working. Worked in the evening, turned it off (shut it down properly). Tried turning it on in the morning and nothing, no life at all. It could be something as simple as the charger (although it was plugged in when using it the night before) but Argos didn't try it.

It may just need a simple ATX reset, unplug it from the mains and remove the battery from the back, hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Plug the mains back in (leave the battery out for now) and try turning it on. If it comes on then it's all fine and the ATX reset worked and you can go ahead and put the battery back in and use it as normal. If it doesn't work then you are no worse off than you are now.

If you don't want to contact Argos via telephone you can contact them via e-mail. The address is info@argos.co.uk

If you put a contact telephone number, an advisor will call you back. Please remember to put in the email the date of purchase, the store it was purchased from and also the cat number.

In the case of e-mails, the agent will resolve the issue and call you back with a response.

Also the info that I have given is the correct policy and any member of staff within the head office or call centre will confirm this.:j

Ps please excuse spelling and grammer in previous e-mail, I was using iPhone and I didn't re- read what I wrote!

I wish I could say things were resolved, but they are still not. After more emailing with HP, they wanted me to send them the original receipt. So I went back into Argos today and they said there was a mark on the laptop so they are unsure if they will even look at it! I had never even noticed it before, its like a pencil or something has been in the way when closing the top of the laptop and left a small dent/whole. Its only cosmetic. It is just above the hinge and only on the plastic. They have kept it in store to contact HP again tomorrow as they are closed on a sunday.
Does this now mean my guarentee is invalid and they dont need to investugate why it isnt working? I had never even spotted the mark before so I dont see that it could be the problem. :(

I wonder why they are being funny like that, Argos used to be very good.
I think its time to get shirty tell them if they don't fix it you be taking them to court - under SOGA thought the court may need a independent report. All chargeable to Argos
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

Your warranty runs from the date of purchase, until you confirm that date with an invoice HP treat the warranty start date as the purchase date by argos.

It doesn't matter how long Argos has it stored in their warehouses, Your warranty runs from the date you purchased it from them.

I don't see how we can possibly conclude this without seeing the warranty documents. The terms of the warranty are dictated by the manufacturer and/or retailer, not by some 'standard' rules.

It's not rare (albeit uncommon) for products to be listed as 'Warranty until x date' rather than '1 year warranty'

Did you try the ATX reset that I explained above? It could resolve your problem in minutes.

Copied from HP warranty section on their website.

The Limited Warranty Period starts on the date of purchase or lease from HP. Your dated sales or delivery receipt, showing the date of purchase or lease of the product, is your proof of the purchase or lease date. You may be required to provide proof of purchase or lease as a condition of receiving warranty service. You are entitled to hardware warranty service according to the terms and conditions of this document if a repair to your HP Hardware Product is required within the Limited Warranty Period.

Also in my 31 years of selling, fires, cookers, microwaves,TV's,washing machines, kettles, hairdryers, tumble dryers, toasters ( need I go on ?) Have I ever had an issue with a manufacturer stating that their warranty runs from date of manufacture NOT purchase. Warehouses all around the world store products for an infinate amount of time, before it hits the shops. It is normal practice in retail shps to run a warranty from date of Purchase. As long as proof of purchase for the product can be shown from the retailer concerned, the manufacturer will abide by their warranty.

Could you show some examples of products and manufacturers you know of that don't work in this fashion?

AT the end of the day, the laptop is under one year old, it should have been instantly replaced by Argos, the OP should not be speaking to HP about anything.
