The only other thing to watch out for is forged notes.

Strictly speaking it is an offence to let the new buyer drive off without insurance,

Please tell us the Act and section that you think that this an offence under.

A private seller has no responsibility for the legality of the purchaser's use of it, once they've sold the car.

From memory: IN14 Causing or permitting driving without insurance.

The police threatened my stepdad with it after he sold an old banger that was used in a ram raid that evening but decided not to bother as they could see he had nothing to do with the robbery.

Once a vehicle is sold, the old keeper has no responsibility for it, or what the new owner does with it.............The police were bluffing.

(IN14 is the driving licence endorsement offence code, not the offence)

Yep it's what you get done for if you lend your car to a mate who turns out not to be insured to drive other cars.

IN10 is the code for the driver but I believe the penalty is the same (6 points and £200 if dealt with by fixed penalty)

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Sorry but you are wrong on that one.

Ownership never changes, transfer of register keeper changes, break the rules and they will soon show you who "owns" the vehicle by "seizing" it.

    What are you on about?

I own both my cars. The police don't nor do the dvla!

Has anyone ever let the viewer / potential buyer take the car for a test drive without you being in the car?
I only ask as It may be just me at home (which being female i dont feel comfortable going in a car with strangers). My partner is hoping to be home, if not my parents can come over but not sure if I can just let them take car for test drive of their own if they leave there car with me? Anyone had good/bad problems with this?
I know i should have arranged it another time when both at home but I didnt want to put the viewer off by saying no not today not tomorrow etc.
I was allowed to test drive a car on my own. The car owner was local and his wife worked at my doctors surgery. I didn't know them but I expect they recognised me and knew where I lived. I was also once left with a three year old girl as security when I sold a motorbike. I gave her a biscuit, she seemed happy.
In your situation I would not allow anyone to drive your car alone, or with you unless you are 100% comfortable with them. A genuine buyer will wait for a test drive. You seem very keen to sell, please don't be rushed into a situation or price because of this.

Hi well thanks for all the advice. My boyfriend got home in time and the potential buyer was meant to be at ours for 6pm. I only gave him our postcode area and to call when near to direct in as new estate but has failed to show and not answering his phone. Time waster!! After all that worry about my boyfriend not being home in time and me seeing them and haven't even shown up!Oh well their loss
