BT Vision - Phone Call Last Night

Options
Yesterday evening, just arriving home, I had a phone call from someone claiming to be from BT - they said that I hadn't used my BT Vision On Demand facility and wanted me to run a trailer so they could update their records.

This made no sense and, in the process of preparing a meal, I said it was inconvenient. They said it would only take a minute or 2 and I said it was still inconvenient.

When later, I had the opportunity to check and call back the number - 08004080815 - there was a recorded message saying that someone from The Guardian had called.

Now what's that all about?

Actually the phone message said "You have been called today ON BEHALF OF The Guardian"

I've since Googled that number and it was, albeit quite convincing at the time, a known scam caller.

Do you have BT Vision ?, I had a letter a while ago from BTV saying they noticed I dont have the BTV box connected anymore ( this is quite correct, a power line adapter went faulty after a few years and I was only on the basic PAYG service, no monthly fee so I disconnected it all) and they offered to send an engineer out for free to sort out any problems...I didnt reply though....
If you do have BTV I dont see how playing a trailer can 'scam' you in any way

Unless the trailer contains a virus that can allow them free access to your home network, hence bypass the router firewall?

I Googled the telephone number and it comes up as a well-known scam line.

I didn't hang round to see what the scam was but I am guessing that as he said "we want to update our records" that personal information would be gathered.

I think as the poster above mentioned, should there be any change to my BT service then they would send a letter in the post, as normally is the case.

I had a genuine call from my car insurer last week but, so bombarded with scam calls as we are these days (I am with TPS but mostly they come up as International on caller display) I would not give him my personal details until he passed MY security check.

All the VOD you stream from BT is located on BTV servers so its not like a scammer can direct you to a dodgy site, its very safe and secure
