Car seats for airplane?

I'm not sure where to put this, so please move if need be mods. :) We're preparing for our first flight (to Chicago) with the bean and are hoping to take a car seat/travel system sorta deal with us. We're flying United, who says that the seat must be FAA approved, but online elsewhere, it seems to be sufficient that the…

They need to be a 5 point harness and have a way of using the airline lap belt to fix the rear facing seat forward facing. Our Graco had C shaped slots on the back (like you use to feed the lap part of a car seatbelt through for rear facing) which were used for this and we used it with several different UK and US based airlines without incident. On one UK based airline a friend couldn't use their seat for take off/Landing as it was only a 3 point harness.
