Employment agency is taxing me but my tax code's 810L

I'm currently temping through an agency, my tax code's 810L, I've not earned enough money to pay tax yet but I'm being taxed (not a huge amount but it all adds up over the months).

Initially I didn't pay tax, but it seemed to start when I started to take annual leave and holiday pay was on my timesheet.

Tax doesn't work like that. Tax is spread over 12 months and you get one twelfth of your tax free allowances each month. If you earn over £675.41pm you will pay tax.

I know that!:D As I'm temping in an office through an agency, I'm earning considerably less than the figure you quote which is why I'm bemused about paying tax.

I've not earned enough money during this tax year to pay tax yet.

Theyre guessing you will earn over the tax threshold for the year so instead of asking for a few hundred quid bill they are taking some now.

Wage amounts since april would be handy (if you dont mind sharing) but guessing theres got to be something to suggest to them that youll earn over £8105?!?

But it's a temping job that I've been told won't last for that much longer.

And during the initial few weeks, I didn't pay any tax at all.

A temping job could easily put you over the tax threshold doesnt matter how long you work just how much you earn, and if they think you will earn over the tax threshold they will tax you.

Cant help much more without figures but either way, youll end up paying the right amount over the year, they will give youa rebate should you pay too much. And an invoice if you havent paid enough

This is a temping job from April - August 2012.

Should I wait till the job finishes and try to claim a tax rebate from HMRC by sending copies of my payslips together with my coding notice letter?

The thing is, what if I find another job through the same agency without resolving the issue?!

    HMRC don't know that though.

Tax is based, as I said earlier, on how much you are paid per week or per month. If you earn over the weekly threshold of £155.87 or the monthly threshold of £675.41 you will pay tax in that week or month.
And during the initial few weeks, I didn't pay any tax at all.

That may be because you earned under the threshold or you were getting the benefit of unused tax-free allowances from the beginning of the tax year.

The easiest way to help you understand is to give the figures Clapton asked for. Without that info we can't help.

You can't do that unless you don't plan to work for the rest of the tax year.

There does't sound like there is an issue. It sounds simply like you have earned over the tax-free threshold for that week/month.
