    Breaking the Law ?

Put it this way, someone commits some terrible atrocity with your fake passport and driving licence that you broke the law and made a copy of to get your hands on some cheap tat, then they would throw the book at you.
It's a criminal offence for a reason, terrorists use fake passports and driving licences.

What about all these employers who ask for ID then take a photocopy of said information?

And Facebook, they could make a fortune as they will accept a Scanned passport.

And lettings agents like a scan of a passport

    http://www.hmso.gov.uk/copyright/guidance/gn_20(old%20format).htm

Details here and it mentions who can ask and what can be copied.

From the scan, erase all the 'Technical bits' so minimum information is left behind, and scan it make it greyscale.

You would be breaking crown copyright, maximum sentence is 10 years in prison.
Ask them if they are aware of Crown Copyright ?
If So why are they asking you to commit such a serious offence that could see you in jail for 10 years ?
You do not have to be over 18 years of age to own a T-shirt.

We're all still waiting for your link on that.

  • It's against the law to copy such document and try and replicate it / pass it as the real thing, but not to copy it in the first place. Most holiday operators and insurance companies advise you to take a copy of your passport on holiday with you in case you lose the real one.
I've had to send a copy of ID before. Blank out the number if you're worried about it

Personally I wouldn't claim a prize which required copies of passports etc. I have won a holiday in the past which had an age restriction but I just had to confirm I was telling the truth and they would know when it came to making the arrangements.
There are some dodgy sites and people out there and I think it is a bit extreme wanting such personal details to claim something which, in fairness has limited value and clearly has no age restriction.

Re the comment above about employers, they have to verify eligibility to work in the UK and keep evidence on file, they fall under data protection laws and therefore this information would only ever be kept for the purpose it was collected.
    Thanks to all who post:j
