I hope this is the right place to post this! I just had a call to say I've won a Ginger Joe t-shirt (can no longer find the link to the comp, but it was on their facebook page), and they have asked for a scan of my passport or drivers license as the prize is related to an alcoholic product.
Is this safe? Can they actually use the scan for anything nefarious or am I being paranoid?

I think they are just after your age (?) So you can probably use bits of paper to cover up things like passport/serial numbers if you are concerned about security. Or ask them if you can provide some other ID as not everyone has a passport or driving license.0

You would be breaking crown copyright, maximum sentence is 10 years in prison.
Ask them if they are aware of Crown Copyright ?
If So why are they asking you to commit such a serious offence that could see you in jail for 10 years ?
You do not have to be over 18 years of age to own a T-shirt.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I've had to scan my drivers licence before receiving a prize, it's not unusual. I just covered over things like my signature and info the didn't actually need.
Well done on your win

For a tee shirt!!!!!!
I would inform them of offcial rules about passport data, and suggest you only send a utility bill....
I wish all comps went by IP address and checked the electoral roll, then if you aint on the electoral you cant enter, make it so much easier..Still comping, after 2 heart attacks 4th feb & 6th feb, and a stent put in.. 45 years old only:eek:0 -
Seems very excessive for a t-shirt! Maybe because Ginger Joe itself is alcoholic... I'd do driving licence if you really want the t-shirt, not your passport!0

unfortunately i have had to provide I.D. like this on more than one occasion so i think its a case of we had better get used to it!
What is sad is companies like the Perfume Shop didnt used to ask for I.D. but started asking last year - which is probably due to people who use false/multiple profiles on facebook - and i dont blame the companies asking for I.D. fact i think its a great way of stopping people cheating (because lets face it 99% of us will have utility bills / passports / driving licence or council tax etc with our names on as we need them in real life). And if i was a company giving out prizes i would like to see them going to real people.
I took a photo of my passport with a piece of paper over the passport number so it could not be used for any other purpose (just in case they dont delete their emails etc) then attached it to an email and sent.
Sign of the times, and I am sure more companies will be doing it once they 'wise up' to multiple entrants x
Please dont take this out on the companies as they are providing a prize and they just want to make sure you are a real person xLogic will get you from A to B but imagination can take you anywhere!
Being honest may not get get you a lot of friends - but it will get you the right ones.
Let your past make you better, not bitter.0 -
I had to send a photo/scan of my passport for some perfume this weekend
I took a pic, then deleted the numbers, expiry bits, so they could just see name, pic and date of birth, and the coloured background bits.
All the parts that I had left, I no doubt mentioned when entering.
Added bonus was that my passport expired 3 or 4 years ago0 -
better get used to it ?
Breaking the Law ?
Put it this way, someone commits some terrible atrocity with your fake passport and driving licence that you broke the law and made a copy of to get your hands on some cheap tat, then they would throw the book at you.
It's a criminal offence for a reason, terrorists use fake passports and driving licences.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
