..... If you're out of pocket due to the delay, claim on your travel insurance, that's what it's for.
Here's your bad advice above.

"Staff refusing to fly" ?
Sounds like they ran out of hours.
All crew are limited for safety reasons to working a certain number of hours after which they have to be stood down . It's not an airline regulation -it is US federal law (and UK too). So if your flight was subject to a technical or weather delay that delay may have knocked them over the hours. Depending on which airport it happened at -it may have added to the delay. (For example if the delay was at Heathrow the odds of having relief staff to call in to cover quickly is lower than say at Chicago which is an AA hub)I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Thanks for all the feedback to my original post, greatly appreciated.
The reason I used "s when I said "staff refusing to fly" is because that is exactly what we were told over the tannoy. I understand that they only have certain hours, but surely this can worked out when you're already 3 hours into the flight and haven't left the tarmac yet?
Anyway, thanks for all the feedback.
The bottom line is that it was a total lack of communication between AA and the customers. I understand that things go wrong, that's fine. It's how you deal with them that makes the difference.
Thanks again for the addresses, we'll write and see what happens.
I'll leave you guys to your sqwabbling now...
