    Honestly, the cheapest HTC will be awful.

    For less money you could pick up an Ascend G300 which will smack a cheap HTC into the ground.

    but there is nothing wrong with an old 2nd hand HTC which can be picked up for considerably less than the Ascend G300 which is around £100.

    You're right, there is nothing wrong with a second hand HTC, I'm using one right now (Sensation). However, I'd be surprised if you could get anything better than the Ascend second hand for less to be honest.

    At that price you're looking at a Desire or a Wildfire/S, both of which the G300 has the beating of.

    You might just be able to scrape in a battered Desire HD, which is pretty similar to the G300, albeit a bit bigger.

    If they are going to spend £100 then the G300 is a good choice - I played with a colleagues new one and was pretty impressed. Looks and feels good quality and has respectable spec for the money.
