Hi, i recieved a cheque off HMRC and when opening i teared a 2cm line at the bottom going through one of the bottom digits i sellotaped it and it looks perfect will the bank still be able to cash this in? I ask as i wont be going into town for another few days. Thanks

Cheques with a small tear in are fine (we have cashed them before at work), but you shouldn't have applied tape to the cheque. This may cause the bank to refuse the cheque as it's no longer 'original'. We are told that any 'mutilated' cheques should be placed into a protective sleave which they can be removed from. I guess they just want to make sure you have not altered them.
Try it by all means, different banks may accept it.0 -
I put sellotape over a few of the bottom digits but i noticed it has the same code to the top right so the digits do add up just abit worried as i dont fancy waiting months for another guess i wont know until i actually go to the bank0

Why not give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say.0 -

Not hard to find on its website though an 0845 number.

08000326479 works too
why not just go to the bank and see what they say? the call centre isn't going to know how the cashier will react, whether they are right or wrong0 -
When I was with Santander we accepted cheques torn or taped. Once my manager tore up a stack of cheques by mistake, and I had to tape them back up again. As long as it doesn't look altered, and the digits & words are not obscured in any way, I can't see you having any problem.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0

AIUI a cheque is valid as long as it’s got all the necessary information on it. Every now and then someone does a publicity stunt when they write a cheque on some generally absurd object.0
