Also can anyone provide a good reason why HMRC issues cheques as the default option when everyone else, including Government policy, is trying to discourage cheques?0

Take it to the bank and ask them. There is no other alternative in my view I am afraid.0

I don't think there will be any problems when paying it in: when working for a charity I saw many cheques get torn when the envelopes were cut open.
As for HMRC still issuing cheques, if you self assess you can put your bank details in the form and they refund by direct transfer. For employees who just need a refund, perhaps this would work if you give your bank details in the covering letter.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
