OP, be aware that I am asking about the brand and model of your PC, not your husband's PC.

I have already covered the problem with the Ricoh drive. DVD+R or DVD+RW discs written at slow speed, usually 2x. Though do check the Firmware installed.
Finding the Firmware version for your CD/DVD recorder:

    1. Right click on My Computer (Desktop or Start menu)
    2. Select “Manage” from the right click menu
    3. Select “Storage”
    4. Select “Removable Storage”, then double-click “Libraries” on the right.
    5. Right click on the applicable DVD RW/CD RW drive. Select “Properties”
    6. Go to the “Device Information” tab. “Revision” indicates the firmware version of your optical drive.

I want to look at the problem of upgrading your PC to SP3.

Thanks for the help with the Ricoh drive, I'll look at doing that install when I've got time to sit read and do it properly. Can I just check that it should take DVD +R and DVD +RW? I was trying with DVD+RW but they may have been put through a DVD recorder and had some kind of formatting done. Nothing to do with me!
Re my own PC, it's an HP Pavillion t3000. It isn't connected at the moment as we have got hubby's old one in it's place. Mine was running really slowly. On that one when I try to put things in the CD and DVD drives I get the message about drive E:/being inaccessible. I did try looking into that and it seemed that I needed to be on SP3 to sort that problem out. I'd used the Microsoft fix and that's what directed me to SP3, but it got part way through installing then couldn't finish.

Then try with DVD+R before going further.

For your machine, do you have more details than t3000? Look at the back. The model number will end in uk.
Do you have any discs for the machine?

Xp doesn't write to dvd's without software, which software are you using?

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Still confused with mentions of 2 pc's

itunes is capable of stopping drives working, if your only problem is writing, try using imgburn

Easiest way to solve your problems with your machine if you don't have any data that you wish to keep, is to do a Destructive Restore and to immediately install all available Windows Updates.
You may also need more RAM to get the best from your machine. £10 can cover it.

Two completely unconnected problems with different machines.

Perhaps no need for ImgBurn at this stage....unless they have no optical burning software at all.
