The PC is a Medion, model AWRDACPI (taken that from the System Information)
I've no idea about Firmware - how do I find that out?

Many burning programmes, like Nero and Imgburn can show the optical drives firmware version Tools>Drive>Check firmware version

I've gone into device manager and when I try driver update from there it does say there's nothing better to update. This PC hasn't been used in ages, it does have itunes installed, I want to write DVDs - it will read OK, I don't think we've ever tried to write DVDs before, and we don't have the CD. Can I do anything without it?

Have a look at the back of the PC. The PC details will be on a sticker at the back.

Firmware and instructions for the drive.

It's nothing to do with the Driver.

In ellays question first 2 lines she cleary states she is trying to update 'drivers' for her device

It doesn't matter "what she states"...it matters that you understand the problem and give the correct advice.
This has nothing to do with the Drivers.

You are posting too quickly, without checking the basic facts. Clearly you are trying to be helpful...

The OP should be aware that this drive can only utilise DVD+R DVD discs for recording. The Firmware update will help with compatibility problems.

where it says system cant find anything better driver for your device in device manger is it actually confirming drivers are installed? you may just have a fuk/ed writer as you have never written a dvd to date, also when you eventually get into burning download vso convertxto dvd, you will find it easier than neros interface, im loggin off now, oh a techy thing to do with xps when you get a minute aswell is click on start go to run type in the run box CMD, then type sfc /scannow or sfc/ scanboot, its your xp file protector saves many a format PEACE OUT, and good luck,

    ;)
