You seem to have misunderstood. I did point out the objection you have:

"The only way this doesn't work is if the other person puts in their max bid straight away, but then you wouldn't win it either way so it doesn't matter, and it is obvious that not all users do this."

    okay, thanks Stavros:D
If you place your max bid early then sniping will not affect you, which is what I've been saying.

Thanks for the links, I had a quick look but I remain unconvinced, sniping tools only work if you are willing to pay MORE than your evaluation of the item, otherwise your maximum bid will either win it or not, and when it doesn't it will only be because the price exceeds the price you are willing to pay.

OK.... You assume that people have a max.

    How often do you hear.....
"I paid a bit more than I wanted/intended to, but I REALLY wanted it"?

Nibblers don't know when to stop, it's that simple.

This week I heard a colleague state, in relation to buying a house, and the opening of sealed bids....
"We reckon we lost out by £2,500.... If I had known, I'd have gone in with the extra £3,000"

Do you not think that the second and third highest bidders in an auction would not welcome the chance to enter another bid on an auction they had just lost out on, an extra £1 to see if they can get it?.. £2?

Have you never changed your max? (you know you have and often :p )

Bidding early with a proxy is akin to inviting nibblers......... Your proxy is £45......... Item is at £20........ Nibbler bids max of £32........... Item jumps to £33........... Nibbler decides to "Have another £2"........... Item jumps to £36............ All the time the nibbler is bumping up your proxy, with a bid above their theoretical max. :D

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ....... it's not snipers you need to worry about.... It's those darn nibblers :p

    Your proxy = £49
Nibblers max = £38 ...... And they nibble you up with extra £1, then £1 to £43

Nibblers max = £38 Lack of a proxy means they nibbled up to £35 against others.
    Your snipe = £49 ..... You get item for £36 :)

Thanks Tojo, I think I'll leave it as it is now, I still can't see how sniping is the answer. I think the grounds of the debate have changed and 'nibblers,' a new concept introduced. In your 2nd example when the sniper gets the item for £36 and beats the nibbler, he too would have lost out if I'd a max bid of £37 in place. Regarding your other points, that is lack of discipline, if I think something is worth £10, I mean 10, not £10.50. A similar item will doubtlessly be auctioned at some future date anyway.
Any way, the best of good fortune in your dealings :D

Is sniping software safe? I'd hate it to phone-home with my account details.

I use auctionsniper. I've never had any problems with it.
