Another alternative is to divide by 5 and then you'll have 4 weeks money left at the end of the year.

The number of people I've recommended that to! And you know the std response: "but then I won't have as much to spend each week..." doh! no you won't but at the same time we wouldn't be having this conversation about how you might stop running out of money before payday!

I guess the MSE crowd might be a little more receptive though LOL

I love this idea! Painless way to "steal" some of your every day money for savings :)

as this has dropped down the OS board, I've moved it to the Budgeting board to see if you get some suggestions over here

Zip :)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

It's best to time your direct debits to come out soon after you get paid
I prefer my DDs spread about the month, I know what they'll be, so I still know how much money I've got for savings, etc, but if something happens like I'm paid late, or the bank has a problem, all my DDs don't bounce at once and its less mess to clear up.

I have my DDs in Lloyds, so I even get 3% on the amount I leave in the account whilst waiting for the DDs to come out.

If you're spending, round the estimate up. A direct debit of £37.23 is £40 when budgeting.

If you're earning it, round it down. A pay packet of £1252.97 is £1,200.

If you're estimating a cost, add 10% to it.

If you're timing a cost, assume it happens slightly more often than it really does.

And, in addition to all this cushioning, always build in contingency savings and teat it as a priority bill.

I prefer them to all come out around the same time, so get paid on or just before the 15th (depends on when it falls if the 15th was a Sunday then I'm paid on Friday 13th.)

Then direct debits and SO's come out between the 16th and 20th of the month for my main bills.

What's left over is then split into savings and spending for the month.

Its easy to do OP, have the months along the top and then each of your DD's going down the left hand side and then a total at bottom of each column for each month. Then do another total showing the total of your DD's taken away from your monthly wage and whats left is how much you should have to spend.
