    Hi Stacey

I hope all is going well, and you are nice and warm in your new "nest".

Just a thought for you, I have recentley started to paint furniture, started off with a few practice pieces like a set of shelves & a sewing box, but am moving on now.

I managed to get a 60's / 70's solid wood chest of drawers and a book case from Freecycle-these are really well made and will probably out live me!

I've bought chalk paint & wax from a lovely person on ebay who sent me directions by email as well, then I got sanding paper & sugar soap from Wilkinsons.
I'm on holiday in a weeks time so these are my projects. The chest will be sanded down and the top waxed in natural wood, amd the rest painted in cream.

Not sure if this is your "thing" or you have room, but I can definately tell you from experience that old furniture lasts and lasts and lasts. I have a large old pine chest of drawers in our bedroom (old pitch pine not painted) that was given to me from a farmer who'd stored it in his barn for 30 years. It's now been with me for 28 years, used every day (my husband has one big drawer-I have all the rest!!!) and it still looks the same and will as I said out live me!

  • Glad all went well and you're in! Hope you settle in quickly and can enjoy your first Christmas in your own home!!!!! :D
Spends haven't been too bad so far although we are going to have to buy a new washing machine as ours needs a hot and cold feed and there is only a cold feed here. We were debating whether now is the right time as it is 7 years old and has been causing us trouble/had bits replaced in the last couple of years so now is the time I guess.

Just a thought if this isn't something you have budgeted for in the short term -you can buy a simple little connector that would mean you can use you old machine until you have saved up/decided on a new machine. Its a Y connector (I don't know if that's its official name but it is the shape!!!:o)

  • Hello everyone,

I just wrote a really long reply, commenting to you all individually and writing down some figures and lost it all!
I have a really weak internet connection at new house and won't be getting a proper connection until 4th Dec :(.

Anyway for now I will just write the figures (if I can remember them)!

    £97500 Mortgage Start Figure
    £84000 MFiT-T3 aim by 12/12/15.
    £13500 Reduction.

£90035 Estimated balance at 12/12/15 if no OP's made (fig from s/sheet).

    £5550 amount of OP's needed by 12/12/15.
Aiming to achieve this by saving 111 £50's as I think my saving the small amounts I normally do I will soon save a £50 and feel like I am achieving something.

If we manage to OP £5550 by this date, the spreadsheet says:
    £7947 saved in interest
2 years 2 months term reduced.
Monthly interest will decrease from £324.19 to £260.39.

For me this challenge is more about financial security against interest rate rises when the 5 year fix is over although it is nice to know you are 'saving money paid on interest' and 'owning a bit more'.

Budget for this month in cash is:
    £160 Food (£40pw)
    £20 Takeaways/Alcohol treats
£40 Fritter (£10pw) [postage, parking, activities for kids etc]

I have left £30 in the food budget in the bank for store cupboard/freezer stock ups as we really did run them down before the move.

I am going to create an online bank account for OP's to transfer my pennies and pounds into and then when I reach £50 I will OP it.

I have another challenge to save a £6k emergency fund as a buffer in case we need any unbudgeted house repairs (hopefully not!) or should my husband lose his job (unlikely).

Thats all for now, I will get this posted before I lose it again!

2024 - happy, healthy, quality over quantity, buy nothing new (and 2nd hand only if NEEDED), mindful spending, nurturing myself and family, living for now.

Mortgage @ 31/12/23 £248k - too high, interest rate gone up - want this down asap!
    Debt @ 31/12/23 £16k - no interest - will clear over 5 years hopefully.
Emergency savings £4k - been ransacked over last year - needs attention :-(
  • Hello everyone!

I am still here (very unpatiently waiting for the proper broadband connection on 4th Dec).

    Quick update for you all:

First mortgage payment to be taken tomorrow :T.

Created a mortgage OP account and had beginners luck in that:
    £21 credited from quidco
£138 council tax budgeted but due to move won't be taken this month.
£262.73 saved for nursery fees but now not required.
£418.73 opening total for mortgage OP account!!!! :D:D:D

Now I just need to phone halifax and see how to OP it!
I will OP in £50's so I can keep track of my MFiT-T3 challenge so that will be 8 x £50's already!

I will update again soon(and more frequently once internet connection is back properly).

    Best wishes everyone!

  • Another reply lost!!

    Quick update:

Money seems to be flowing out rather than in so in an effort to regain control I am concentrating on the here and now!

    NSD today!

    £35.10 in the purse (£10 Fritter & £25.10 Food)

Aim to spend max of £15.10 during this budget week (new budget starts saturday). If stick to this then will put £10 in sealed OP tin and put the £10 fritter money into sealed bucket list tin. Note to self need to keep fritter money separate or else it gets spent on food.
Some basic food items to get plus some party food for son's 3rd birthday on weds.

Wish I could update more & regularly but internet is so bad!!

This place really keeps me focused on and helps me achieve my goals so can't wait to get back good and proper.

Love the house so much I cannot wait to pay the mortgage off and own it outright!! Bring it on!

If your internet is flakey write your reply in notepad (on Windows) or notes (on an Apple device) then copy and paste it into the website and press submit. That way if the submit fails you can just paste and resubmit until you succeed.
