10Gb limit but unlimited wifi - I am being stupid - but Eh??

Options
Looking around to get the internet sorted in my new flat and notice that BT offer you a deal with data limits per month (i.e 10gb) but then go onto say unlimited wifi, and this confuses me!

I would only ever use wifi in my flat anyhow - I suppose the unlimited wifi means if you're connected to btopenzone?

But then does that mean anyone sat in my garden connected to btopenzone can download unlimited via wifi - whereas I would be restricted to 10gb? - How is that fair?

I am obviously being stupid - but how does it work?

I need wifi in my flat. Not interested in TV or phone, and I want to be able to watch lots of iplayer and tv online...... I am finding it so difficult to understand all the deals though!

10GB per month at home, and unlimited Wifi using BT Hotspots (i.e. not at home)

If you want to watch a lot of streaming video, eg from the BBC iplayer you really need an unlimited contract.
A one hour programme from the BBC iplayer represents around 700 Megabytes of your data allowance.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

The 'Unlimited' usage represents 166 hours and 40 minutes of WiFi outside the home. Approximately one week. After that, you will have to log in every half hour.

In effect, if you were using your neighbour's connection, you would be feeding off their bandwidth.

10GB is not enough for you.

So if I use up 10Gb in my flat, I can log out and log back in again on btopenzone? is it that simple?

BT told me 10gb would be 25 hours of streaming TV per month

I think that may be optimistic I watch most of my TV on catch up plus some youtube, and easily go through 3-4GB a day.

an HD 1 hr program on iplayer is about 1.2GB he same program in SD will be about 700MB, I would say if you are going to watch more than 9 hrs of TV a month (taking into account any other internet browsing) you need unlimited not 10GB a month.

Plus you need a TV licence. Unless you never intend going near live TV. Ever....

In effect you are providing the BT Wifi signal. It's designed for when you're away from your home really. Equally, unless anybody else it providing a BT Wifi signal that's available in your flat then there won't be have one available.
This, if your intention was to 'hotswop', if and when you used your 10GB up. Although, having to log back in every 30 mins, would be a massive pain. Hence it not really being intended as a supplement to your own available bandwidth.
    i.e
"In order to use BT Wi-fi, your BT home hub needs to be opted in to share a small portion of your home broadband with other members of the BT Wi-fi community. This is what creates a wi-fi network for you to use when you are OUT and ABOUT." (my emphasis)

Equally, you may not be able to log in to your own router as a BT Wifi hotspot (otherwise it's a free workaround for everybody isn't it and they'd never be able to upsell the 20GB allowance, etc). Although, I'm open to contraction on that.
I posted a load of suggestion for student broadband on your original post.
I'd be looking at martin's cheap broadband post and a 30/40 gb allowance if you intend watching Jeremy Kyle all day.. lol.. sorry, sorry....
