Make your cut tulips last longer

My OH bought some tulips for me for mother's day :j and I thought other MSE's would like to know this tip from my mum to make them last longer.
Take a pin/needle and pierce through the stem, as close to the flower head as possible. Apparently this makes them last longer and stops the heads from flopping.

Anyone know why this works (assuming it does)? I'm fascinated.
I know that florists wire tulips to stop them from drooping.:eek:
That's right, they actually get some stiff florist's wire and run a bit into the inside of each flower :rolleyes:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Sorry this is a really late reply!! Came to the board via a google search following a comment on Twitter.
I looked it up and according to Martha Stewart's guide to arranging cut tulips the rationale for the pin is that the holes allow for air flow and thus expedite the water flow.
Of course,after all this time you may know this!!0
