Free tax through disability - changing vehicles query?

Basically my mum gets free road tax through disability. She's received her tax disc for her car, but she's now put down a deposit on another car as her current one is on its last legs.

We're going to pick it up tomorrow, but obviously she'll need to hand in the tax disc that she currently has (the car is getting scrapped btw). She'll then need to pick up a free (when i say free, i mean a disc with no charge) tax disc for the new car.

Thing is, she doesn't know how you go about doing this having owned this car before she was classified disabled. She thinks she needs to inform the disability folk but isn't sure.

Basically, what is she required to do so that i can let her know what's what? Thanks.

She has a certificate of entitlement. She needs to take that along with the V5, insurance and MOT to the local DVLA office to get the vehicle's taxation class changed to Disabled. She may need the full V5 and not the slip - I can't remember offhand.

To get the car changed to disabled class all she needs do is go to the post office with her entitlement cert and docs. To change back to normal tax she will need to go to the local DVLA office.

Does she really need to go to the local DVLA office? I don't remember her ever having mentioned the need to do that when she got it for her current car - as the nearest office is 20-30 mile away, so i'm sure she'd have said something about the need to travel out there. Is there no alternative way?

I did one at the DVLA office.

Post Office woman didn't know what to do with it and you need the taxation class changed.

If you go to the DVLA they'll sort the V5 out and give you a disabled disc on the spot, plus arrange a refund for any tax on the new car (full months onl;y).

You might be able to do it at the post office if you find someone who has had a bit of training.

    5t.

No she doesn't as padded john has pointed out, I too have simply taken the form to the post office counter;)

To change the taxation class to 'Disabled' can be done at a post office or a DVLA local office.
To change it back from 'Disabled' to its original taxation class must be done at a DVLA local office.

The problem she has is she doesn't have the V5 back.

The car has run out of tax & is also not insured (onto that saga in another thread i think).

So she needs to sort out both the tax situation & the insurance one. She can't tax it until the car is registered disabled as she doesn't pay for tax & if i understand correct, she can't register it disabled until she gets the V5 with her name on it through the post, which can take 4-5 week or so.

So question is, what to do in this instance?

How do you declare SORN without the relevant documents?

Went on vehiclelicence.gov.uk & it says you need the V11 or logbook.

All we currently have at the moment is the new keepers tear off slip - the garage is sending off the V5 & it can take 4-5 weeks or so from previous experience, for it to come through. Also when we were buying the car, he had a backlog of forms he'd not sent off, so God knows when he'll get round to it.

So as it stands, how do you declare SORN without these papers?
